Review

"With its many clinical photos (not usually seen in other, similar books), this is clearly one of the best board reviews available. I highly recommend this for board review and as a desk reference for all involved in the practice of internal medicine." - Vincent F Carr, DO, MSA, FACC, FACP(Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences) 5 star Doody Rating!

The John Hopkins Internal Medicine Board Review (IMBR) 4th edition fits with my learning / review style, and is definitely helpful in my preparation for recertification. I maintained a full practice while studying for 3 months, averaging 24 hours of study a week, prior to the recertification exam in May 2012.
What I like:
- 75 chapters packed with essential information in easy to digest outline format
- High quality glossy prints, photos, tables, figures, flow charts, pleasing and variable fonts, color coded throughout, easy on the eyes
- Book opens flat on table or table top book stand (I eat and read daily to save time)
- Very easy to flip to the desired topic for quick review or refresh
- Online access(not pdf format, but text search or topic search is a lot quicker)
- Online review questions - can be taken many times, prior answers not saved.
- Review questions are different from board questions in format and presentation. Board questions tend to pack more patient's data, physical exam, social or family histories, on top of a few relevant clues. Review questions are good for finding weakness areas for more review.
- Very good chest X ray reproductions and review. Dermatology pictures are fantastic. All pictures are very good indeed.
- Book and online access = very inexpensive, available on demand, no travel required.
- Chapter 1 most valuable advices - Maximizing Test Performance: Effective Study and Test-taking Strategies. I consider this a FAQ about board exam prep, and went over many times.
What I do not like:
- Information overload causes waste of time, anxiety.

Very nicely written board review .Complements the audio CDs from Johns Hopkins board review . Unfortunately my online version is web based and not in PDF format and hence not user friendly . Nonetheless a top notch review book .I own the 2011 ediition.

I received the book on 1/27/2014 and was very disappointed because the expertconsult.com site that you need to access the 1000 questions was down and didn't allow you to register. The book itself is pretty informative, but the question bank is just as important for review purposes.
I must reevaluate my review since the expertconsult.com site came back online on about 2/10/14. It now allows you to register and you have access to the book and the questions online. It also allows you to use the Inkling app for free to view the book and questions on my ipad. Download the Inkling app on your ipad and use the same email address and password as you use for the expertconsult.com site to log in. I recommend getting the book and not the Kindle version, especially if you have an ipad. The questions are fairly challenging and the answers provided are clear and concise. This purchase is certainly worth the price now. I have to give it 4/5 stars now and would probably have given it 5 if the site was working from the beginning.

Of the board review books, this was the most comprehensive. The material is more dense than other review books so if you want just a brush-up on material go to the other ones. If you want fairly detailed review of topics, this is the book for you. Despite its small size, its packed full of information so beware - it takes a lot longer to read and memorize material. The book comes with a question-bank that can be accessed online or with an online app. I used both (computer and android) and I liked it. The questions were well written and just a little bit harder than the actual Board exam. The explanations and questions could be used by themselves as a quick review methodology.

This is quite possibly the best book I've come across in medicine thus far. I'm a final-year med student (already took Steps 1 and 2CK) and want to go into IM. I am incredibly bored when it comes to USMLE material because it's the same repetitive stuff over and over again, and not to mention, USMLE Step 3 resources don't pack the punch. So I bought the Johns Hopkins IM board review book for public trans going to and from hospital, and all I have to say is: THIS IS A HUGE BREATH OF FRESH AIR. I actually feel like I'm learning new stuff again, and the level of detail is definitely above USMLE yet not excessive (i.e., it's not a circumlocutory tome of information; it's detailed but still concise). I'm about half-way through the book at the moment and could not be more pleased. I'm debating whether to give this one a second read-through once finished or to move on to the Mayo IM book, MKSAP or Harrison's. Either way, this JH text is a definite yes. And it's well-written too. I'm pedantic when it comes to errors in textbooks, but I've only found 2 or 3 spelling/grammatical errata in half the book so far.

It is reasonable quality Board Review book but I would definitely not use it as a stand alone for IM Boards re-certification or initial certification. Having said that, I did re-certify using mostly this review book, but did feel little deficient during the exam.
The price is very cheap and the quality of the paper, printing and images is top notch.
