For the collector or admirer of fine English earthenware, the Old British Castles collection from Johnson Brothers offers a full range of dinnerware and accessories. Each piece depicts a historic British castle set in an 18th-century landscape, with the name of the castle and year of its setting inscribed at the bottom of the scene. The Old British Castles earthenware collection comes in either blue or deep pink on an ivory background.

This historical and traditional pattern, old British castles, intricately rendered by a miss fennel back in 1928. She, the daughter of a master engraver, created these original drawings from old book photographs and steel engravings. OBC is certainly one of the best known patterns from Johnson Brothers and has been in production since 1930. Each piece of china depicting a scene of a different castle has extended to 45 castles. Some of the most famous castles included in the OBC pattern are-Cambridge, duns table, exeter, haddon hall, kent, stratford, and warwick. This set include dinner, salad, cereal bowl, cup and saucer.

I own an older piece from England. It hangs on my wall, the color is very bright after all of these years.
My newer ones that I just purchased from here, which are made in China- huge difference in color tone, not as bright.

The glaze - some pieces have a couple of bumps just minor flaws. As far as stacking them up on a shelf, it needs paper towel in between pieces for some of the very edges of the plates are not smooth as my older piece has a very smooth back.

Dinner plates - nice, pretty

Salad plates - nice, pretty

Cereal bowl - nice, pretty

Cup and saucer -
Cup very small design not as pretty to look at it. It looks very cheap comparing with the rest of the set.
Saucer, picture not as visible.
Very poor job on both pieces, not as dainty and delicate as the older Johnson Brothers from England. I was very disappointed with both pieces.

Overall review -
The feel of the pieces are the same as my older piece. Glaze and looks are OK, it could be better, taking in consideration that this carries the title/name of a well known name in the tableware/china industry.

I am very sadden that some of the major British dinnerware companies have given up quality for production costs.

I gave it a four star because the set still looks very charming and pretty overall. It still makes a very attractive dinner table with all of the charms of the past.

Shipping was quick. Well packaged and no broken pieces.

The Johnson Brothers Old Britain Castles pink dishes were exactly what I had been looking for. Unfortunetly the price for number of dishes was completely misrepresented and inflated. I have since found the very same dishes at a fraction of the price. I was sooo dissapointed and couldn't justify the price so I sent them right back!!

Really wanted to love this set, even with the relatively muted colors, but it is practically impractical. The dinner plate is indeed 10" round, but nearly half of its width is taken up by the very wide, slanted, fluted rim. This leaves a flat surface of only about 5.5" wide for cutting on or eating off of. A chicken leg couldn't lie flat on it. The salad plate is similarly proportioned, and the cereal bowl holds only about 1 cup, or 8 fluid ounces. Try eating your breakfast out of the 1-cup measuring cup in your kitchen drawer! If you are looking to cut your portions to 1/2 of itty-bitty, this set might be perfect for you; but otherwise, you'll be going back for 2nds, 3rds, 4ths, and still have leftovers....
