Product Description

Amazon.com Review

While the Historic America pattern also comes in pink or blue, there's something about the sepia brown of old photographs that conjures up the true essence of history. This 20-piece dinnerware set accommodates four diners, enough to set in motion a lively discussion of America's past and present. Each piece depicts a different setting or landmark of significance in American history. For example, the 10-inch dinner plate depicts the Capitol Building in Washington, D.C., as it probably looked in the early 1800s, while the 8-inch salad plate shows tall-masted ships sailing into Boston Harbor (spelled "Harbour" on the plate due to the company's English origins). Also included in each place setting are a 6-inch soup bowl, a teacup, and saucer. Titles are inscribed on the image as well as on the American eagle stamp of authenticity on the back.

The border of Historic America dinnerware is historic as well, having undergone several transformations since its inception in the 1930. The current border features ivy, oak leaves, and acorns on a cross-hatched background. Details are sharp, since each scene is reproduced from a copper engraving. Despite its nod to history, Johnson Brothers dinnerware is decidedly modern, being safe for the microwave, freezer, and dishwasher. --Ann Bieri

Product Description

Historic America was originally introduced in the 1930's as a tribute to america and reintroduced in 2001 in warm tones of sepia to reflect the sense of history. Each piece features a finely detailed engraving of a famous American city or landmark as a tribute to the memories of early America. The designer selected over 30 different scenes all about 100 years ago, from which copper engravings were made. To lend unity to the series the famous over all "oak and acorn" design was used as the pattern for the border of each piece. Many interesting examples of this designs are to be seen today in the American wing of the Metropolitan Museum and also at the Philadelphia Museum. A distinguishing back stamp bears the Amercian Eagle and the title of each scene. Some of the scenes include the Capitol Building, Boston Harbour, NY Crystal Palace, The Clermont River Boat. The twenty piece set includes four each of a 10 - inch dinner plate, an 8 - inch salad plate, 6 - inch soup/cereal bowl, teacup and saucer. All pieces are dishwasher, freezer, and microwave safe.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice, but many broken, and probably factory seconds, April 11, 2005

This review is from: Johnson Brothers Historic America 20-Piece Dinnerware Set, Service for 4 (Kitchen)
These are beautiful dishes. Unfortunately, they were poorly packed at the factory in the original boxes, and many of them arrived badly broken. I originally wanted a 12-place setting. I anticipated there might be a broken piece or two, and ordered a 16-place setting instead. Guess what? Almost every single box had either badly deformed, misprinted, or broken dishes in it - but I really liked them. What did I do? Ordered another 16-place setting, of course, sorted out the broken and deformed ones from the good ones, and returned a 16-place setting. I mean, yes, it was a lot of work, but I ended up with a (nearly) perfect 16-place setting for a C-note after coupon, and that was just too hard to turn down since I liked the dishes so much. Where there is a will there is a way, but I probably wouldn't do it again. Sorting all the dishes, repacking them, and shipping them back (even though Amazon did pay the return shipping charges because they arrived broken due to poor packing) was just WAY too much work. Once I got them sorted though, I must admit, they were an exceptional value, and they are very nice looking (while I do believe them to be factory seconds, some of the flaws were very minor, and not noticeable - these are the ones I kept). Amazon was reasonably nice about taking the broken ones back, as always, and I only had to do one follow-up email to get the full amount credited back to my card (for some reason, Amazon nearly always figures out a way to miscalculate the refund amount on returns, although I doubt if that is intentional). But all is good now. I have my very nice 16-place setting of English dishes, and Amazon has their C-note. Nice deal, but a lot of work!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very pleased....., January 7, 2005

....a nice dinner set. There is nothing misleading about this dish set. The colors are all the same as photographed, only better in person. I love these dishes so much! I have them displayed in my china hutch. A very nice way to display art & history in one.

There are two Historic America patterns, and older multicolored which is quite striking, and this newer set, which is "sepia" or brown colored. While I like it quite a bit, it does not have the uniqueness of the original Johnson Brothers pattern. This set is microwave, and dishwasher safe and has a very nice sheen. All of the plates show one pattern, all of the bowls another scene, and so forth. It sets a nice table and is easy to accesorize with earth tones.
