First introduced in the 1930s, Historic America is a tribute to the United States and its heritage. Each piece features an American city or notable landmark in a finely detailed engraving in warm sepia tones. More than 30 cities or landmarks are displayed on different pieces, each represented in a finely detailed engraving originally rendered on copper then pressed to the piece. An oak and acorn design graces the border of all pieces, providing a unifying theme; the back of each piece is stamped with an American Bald Eagle and the title of the scene.

This 10-inch salad bowl features the Point Marshall Lighthouse in Port Maine, which juts into Penobscot Bay and has a long history as a navigational aide and a haven for artists drawn to its stunning sunsets. Made of high quality earthenware in England, the bowl is durable enough for everyday use and is safe in the microwave, freezer, and dishwasher. Historic America was originally introduced in the 1930's as a tribute to america and reintroduced in 2001 in warm tones of sepia to reflect the sense of history. Each piece features a finely detailed engraving of a famous American city or landmark as a tribute to the memories of early America. The designer selected over 30 different scenes all about 100 years ago, from which copper engravings were made. To lend unity to the series the famous over all "oak and acorn" design was used as the pattern for the border of each piece. Many interesting examples of this designs are to be seen today in the American wing of the Metropolitan Museum and also at the Philadelphia Museum. A distinguishing back stamp bears the Amercian Eagle and the title of each scene. The featured scene on this 10 inch Salad Bowl is the Point Marshall Lighthouse. All pieces are dishwasher, freezer, and microwave safe.

I bought 3 of these...one for me and each of my sister-in-laws, since our last name is Marshall. I use it for salads, vegetables, you name it. One of my sister-in-laws uses it as a fruit bowl and its always on her counter. Who knows about the other one? Its sturdy, attractive, and my 9 year old son loves it because it has an acorn pattern around the outside and he loves acorns!

Great buy! The matching peices are great, too!
