Use the 40-0921 to tackle a variety of projects--from installing tile to putting in cabinets

Ideal for Installing Cabinets, Floors, Chair Rails, and More

Made by Johnson Level, the 40-0921 self-leveling cross-line laser level kit is useful for a variety of building projects that require horizontal or vertical leveling--whether you're installing a chair rail, putting in kitchen cabinets, adding drop-ceilings, or framing a room. Line laser levels like the 40-0921 are used by contractors, electricians, glaziers, finish carpenters, and other professionals.

Cross-Line Laser for Greater Versatility
With the 40-0921 line laser level, you can often complete projects more quickly and with fewer people than you could using a traditional level. This 40-0921 projects a cross-line beam that consists of a vertical line and a horizontal line, enabling you to establish a vertical or horizontal plane. A 360-degree graduated base allows for angle layouts.

Self-Levels for Increased Accuracy
Unlike bubble and spirit levels, whose accuracy depends on the people holding them, the 40-0921 line laser level self-levels automatically to within plus or minus 6 degrees. Consequently, as long as your level is calibrated correctly, you can tackle building projects with confidence and achieve error-free results. A visual indicator lets you know when the device is out of level.

Product Information
The 40-0921 line laser level is suitable for indoor or outdoor use and has an interior range of up to 100 feet, depending on the light conditions. It can be operated continuously for up to approximately 12 hours on one set of batteries. A locking mechanism protects the inner pendulum when the level is being carried. The level measures 5 by 4 by 3.5 inches (H x W x D) and weighs 1.2 pounds.

I used this to install 120 TV wall mounts at a college dormitory. It made work so very simple. We coordinated with the contractor to put wood backing at the TV location so we would just get the mounts level and screw them down without having to figure out the stud placements. Using a drill template and this laser level we were able to install 1 tv mount every 5 minutes.

The bad: The tripod only goes up about 4 feet, maybe a little more. Well easy solution would be to get another tripod, right? NO! It uses proprietary threads, not the standard thread that cameras use. So I got a professional tripod that had a very large head so I could just set the laser on top of it. Very disappointed that they went this route.

Other thoughts: If the room is very bright they include eye glasses that turns everything red, but makes the laser beam jump off the wall.

It's a great unit, just a little disappointed that they made the tripod so short and the fact that you can't easily use a different one.

Ok, so for $100 I was on the fence of whether I actually "needed" this thing. I do several home projects and having a quality laser level can speed up and ease those projects along. Well, now that I've owned this for several months and used it on a number of projects (painting, hanging photos, installing new stair rails, etc), I can honestly say that this is definitely worth the purchase price. The laser level shoots a beam that is very tall and wide, you will only need to reposition this thing a few times to cover an entire small to medium sized room if you're wanting to run a line horizontally all the way across the room. For the stair railing, to cut holes for the balusters, the way you'd need to do it without a level such as this is mark your position on the top rail, then hang a plumb bob and mark the bottom spot. This is very tedious (believe me, this is how I was doing it previously). For one rail, it probably took me 30 minutes. After I got this level, all you do is mark you top bar, put that laser line over your top mark and mark the bottom. Absolutely beautiful. This was well made and comes with everything you need. My only complaint is putting everything back in the box. I would suggest taking a picture of how everything is laid in there before you start taking it all out so that you'll know how it needs to be positioned to be able to close the box back up!

Again, an absolutely fantastic product. If you do many home projects that require straight line precision, I highly recommend this product.

I bought this level with the intention of using it for a basement project - installing a drop ceiling. It worked very well and have no complaints. Its not the highest quality but for the basic do-it-yourself home owner, it's more than adequate.

Pros:
* Comes with tripod
* Comes with carrying case
* Comes with red glasses for work in bright(er) environments

Cons:
* Tripod only extends up to about 5-1/2 feet
* Doesn't spin very smoothly on its base

I needed to draw a horizontal line around the perimeter of an oddly shaped basement at a height of about 7-1/2 feet. So, the tripod needed to be placed atop of a platform of some left over 5-gal buckets. The longest distance that the level had to draw a line was about 37 feet. At that distance it was still crisp and clear.

The build quality is sturdy. The price of owning this level was well worth it. If I had rented a "pro" laser level for a weekend to do the project, I'd have spent just as much money.

This is a super product, comparable to substantially more expensive units, and in a handy carrying case to boot. The projected lines are clear and thin (that's good), it self-levels wonderfully, and you even get a nicely made tripod with a hand crank and adjustable legs.

So why didn't I give this 5 stars?

1. The unit arrived with something loose inside the sealed level housing, rattled like a child's toy.
2. With the included tripod you can only get as high as 48" from the floor, not over five feet as one of the other reviewers stated. This makes it not quite tall enough to set for the bottom of kitchen cabinets, which are usually around 54" from the floor. You'll have to put the tripod on blocks or paint cans to lift it up.

In spite of this I still heartily recommend this product, and here's why. When I called tech support I got an actual knowledgeable human being (Jim) who quickly shipped out a replacement unit, asking only that I return the defective one to him so he could analyze what broke loose. The replacement arrived in two days, is perfect, and they even gave me a taller tripod to compensate for my trouble.

A solid company, superb support, and a product that I KNOW will be a real help in my upcoming kitchen cabinet job.

Congrats to Johnson, this is a winner.

I used the Johnson 40-0921 self-leveling kit this weekend to do the layout for a large built-in pantry wall cabinet. This is an 87" wide by 16" deep space, split into three compartments. None of the existing walls are perfectly square or plumb so it was going to be a challenge to get the shimming correct so I could end up with three plumb and squared compartments.
This tool was indispensable! I took it out of the box, inserted the three AAA batteries (included), attached it to the included tripod and turned it on. It took a couple of seconds for the self-leveler to settle and in no time I had my center-line plumbed as well as the left and right walls.
The red line that it projects reaches floor-to-ceiling (8') with the tripod positioned only a few feet from the wall. That made figuring out the shimming easy and it was great for positioning the partitions.
Now I have a "squared-up", evenly divided shell, ready for some custom-made shelves and doors.
One note: It would be nice if Johnson added a "positive-click" feature at the 0, 90, 180 and 270 degree points on the base. That would help when you're trying to square up and plumb between two adjacent or two opposite walls.
