I purchased this square almost fifteen years ago. Recently, part of the slide mechanism broke. I called Johnson at their Wisconsin headquarters and asked the lady in customer service if I could buy the small part. "No," she said, "but I'll send it to you free." Four days later it arrived. There were no questions about when I bought the square, no hassles at all--just great, speedy, friendly customer service from a company in the USA. Try doing that with your made-in-Asia hand tools! Oh yeah--the square has always worked great. It's a fine tool from a fine company.

For the price, this is a very solid well made tool. It isn't perfect, and I will get to that. The lines are very thin and strait. I would have liked a bit of longer lines to help show the difference between 1/4", and half though. They are the same height, which can make it take a bit longer to know where you are. But overall, the lines are a plus because they are clear, but narrow.

The greatest asset to this thing is that this is a hardend steel and cast iron tool. So right there you are getting better durablility than the cheaper stamped tools. I have no doubt it will last a long time and take some real work to make it inaccurate. My favorite part of this square is that the stop really works. No creep, no wobble... none. That is what makes this go from combo square, to true measurement tool. I don't think a single spring loaded set screw can hold better. One thing that may have been mentioned in the description but I missed initially is the great little harded screw-in scribe this thing has... I love it. Sharp is an understatement. Mine is like a needle and I am impressed by this little touch. This is so important when you have to have exact cuts. A pencil, no matter how sharp, is just too wide and cant get right down there like this little scribe does.

I am overall very impressed by the combo square. I felt a bit mislead by one of the reviews and a "US Made" claim on this tool I saw somewhere. Actually, it says right on the ruler portion that the tool is made in India. Well that is better then China right? The good news is that although made in India, it is shipped to the US and then "inspected and finished" in the US. So if you are a purist, no the tool isn't made in America. It is however tuned up here. As for negatives there are only a few features that I am annoyed with.

I bought this tool for finer carpentry work, it really is an amazing square. Very heavy, feels like it will last forever, I also use it to square my saws, the turn knobs feel sturdy, and the piece fits together well so it slides up and down easily

There is no comparison between this square and the cheap ones. You can tell the difference when you pick it up. I use it mostly for marking points before drilling. Very well made.

I really want a good solid cast iron square. This isn't it and was returned the next day. The square is made in India and came covered in shipping grease. The casting is very rough. The knurl knob was the same size as the barrel making it difficult to turn and tighten. I couldn't remove the scribe. One star. Johnson might have made squares at one time but they obviously don't now.

This is a very well made product!! It is heavy enough to stay put when you are trying to measure something and get a correct line. I have bought levels that are made of plastic and flimsy metal, which most of them have been broken. This level is well worth the money! These guys know how to make a level that will last years!! I highly recommend this product!!

I'm like others who would like to have a Starrett combination square but its $100 price is just too much for my budget. This square appears to be made very well. It slides and locks down securely and the scale is fairly easy to read. The level bubble is not accurate and difficult to read but I normally do not use this feature when using a combination square.
