Unfortunatly, i pilot has major design flaws., January 27, 2011
This review is from: Johnson Outdoors MinnKota i-Pilot Accessory for PDV2 Trolling Motors (Automotive)
I bought an i pilot motor for a new boat- the whole thing, the dedicated version. Replacing it now with less than an hour on it. I have two bass boats, the new one a compact for small water fishing, the older one is a big-lake boat. The old boat has a Minn kota V2 with co-pilot remote, and that works great. Thought the i pilot would be the same but a generation ahead.
Problem with i pilot:
First, the remote is the only control, thus you use it a lot- so it needs to be easy to use. The co-pilot is; it takes only 6 oz of pressure to activate a switch. The i pilot remote takes 2-1/4 lbs, 6 times more pressure. In 20 minutes your thumb is sore. You can clip the co-pilot remote to your rod or arm and control it with a finger touch, your hand never leaving the rod. Not so with the i pilot. You have to grip the remote firmly in your hand to be able to apply enough thumb pressure to activate a switch. It's inconvenient, coarse and painful to use.
Next, a feature that I really wanted was the spot-anchor, where the i pilot is supposed to keep the boat in a small gps circle when set. However it fails to compensate for the momentum created every time the boat is put in motion, so the boat glides right through the circle and outside the limits on the opposite side. The motor spins and the boat rotates 180 to head back. Then it happens again. If you were standing and handling a fish, you would likely be thrown over the side. The power cable wrapped 720 degrees around the shaft in less than a minute. This is a useless feature, even a dangerous one.
Talked directly to Minn-Kota, suggested redesign of the remote with softer switches and cover, and a way to tune down the spot anchor sensitivity or motor speed it uses. They have no interest in doing either and there is nothing the owner can do to change these issues.
No sense owning something you can't use. Min kotas motors are very good- it's the control and gps features of the i pilot that suck.

Don't go fishing without it, April 16, 2011
This review is from: Johnson Outdoors MinnKota i-Pilot Accessory for PDV2 Trolling Motors (Automotive)
Once you've fished with the i-Pilot you'll never fish again without it. Whether alone in the boat or with the grand-daughters this unit takes care of the boat and allows me to enjoy and take care of all the rest, not to mention the improved quality of presentation. Had difficulty with the 1st remote discharging the remote battery, called MinnKota and they immediatly sent a new remote - hassel free customer service that exceeded expectations.
Ordering, shipping and price from this vendor exceeded expectations as well and were all 5 *.
