Minn Kota is the oldest manufacturer of electric fishing motors in the world with more than 70 years of hard-earned experience in the lab and on the water. Throughout its history, Minn Kota has led the way in product innovation and cutting-edge technology. The company has displayed its commitment to trolling motor development and the fishing community in many ways, including creating the first electric gear-driven motor (1934) and the first fully automatic trolling motor (1999). The Minn Kota electric trolling motor began its life in 1934 in Fargo, ND. O.G. Schmidt, inventor of the trolling motor, was known to be a man of many diverse ideas. Prior to the trolling motor, Schmidt invented, produced and sold a copper soldering torch from his home in Wheatland, ND. Due to its success, manufacturing operations were then moved to Fargo. Because of its proximity to the MINNesota-North DaKOTA border, Schmidt named the business The Minn Kota Manufacturing Company.

Cannon Downriggers was started in the mid-1970s by S&K Products in Muskegon, Mich., with the aim of building a better downrigger while keeping it affordable for the average angler. In the early 1980s, Cannon unveiled the original bottomtracking unit, the DTII, and has since continued to improve upon it. The company is now a part of Johnson Outdoors and based in Mankato, Minn.
