4.0 out of 5 stars Serious? Yeah, Serious Fun!
This instrument is 95% serious but then who'd really want a 100% serious ukulele! I had some junky Hawaiian vacation type ukes before I bought this one. It's not much more expensive than a junker and really worth the money. However, you MUST buy new good quality strings to get it to play properly. Right now I'm using Martin M600 Standard Ukulele Strings. I've used...

I can only find ukulele strings on the internet - local stores never stock them.

I bought this as a beginner, and because of that I think it's a lot of fun. That being said, don't buy this if you're expecting a fabulous instrument. If you're just starting out and not willing to pay a lot of money for a better instrument, I recommend it, but be aware that it may have some problems. There is glue visible on mine, for one. It also feels like it is made out of pretty cheap materials. The thing that bothers me the most, though, is that I cannot get it to stay in tune. I have to tune it way more often than I should have to. I am unsure if this is a problem with the tuning pegs or if it's a problem with the strings, but it's a complete pain either way. Next time I buy a uke, I plan on spending a little more for something of better quality.

3.0 out of 5 stars Cheap piece of junk but playable., December 14, 2010

Wow, the Johnson Soprano Ukulele has gone up in price! When I bought mine 10 years ago it only cost $29. This is a very cheaply made instrument. I constantly have to tighten the tuning pegs to get it to stay in tune (slips a lot), and there is some buzzing and bad intonation higher on the neck because this thing has pretty lousy action. But if you were looking for a serious instrument you would pay more than 30 or 50 dollars, wouldn't you? The point is that this thing is playable. I've tried plenty of cheap guitars that were completely unplayable, but this uke can actually be played. The chords are easy to finger. The instrument is easy to hold and strum. Due to abuse from multiple moves and rough storage my uke should have broken years ago, but it is still in perfect condition. If you are just looking for something to play around it - something cheap that is playable - then this is a decent instrument for the price. It is easy to learn the basics of playing ukulele. I never learned very much on the thing, but I have fun doing Hawaiian sounding blues jams from time to time.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Uke needs know how., October 7, 2009

This is a good Uke for the price. It does need some work right out of the box though. If you tighten the tuning pegs this will hold the tune. As with all ukes the strings need to strech out. So you will be tuning it a bit the first few days. Other than that its a great instrument I've had a lot of fun learning how to play it. Not as intuitive as guitar but it makes some cool chords.

4.0 out of 5 stars A nice Uke for the price, September 18, 2009

I bought this uke because of the price and because I haven't played one since my college days. The price was an amazing 40% off during one of Amazon's Lightning deals. I wasn't expecting much quality for that price... in fact I've seen plastic ukulele's for the same price. But when it arrived I was pleasantly surprised with it's real Mahogany body, a carry case, and inlaid position markers. OK, I'll admit that the tuning pegs are a bit on the cheap and so are the strings... but, all in all it's playable when tuned and, more importantly, it's fun! It comes with a beginners chording chart and simple tuning instructions..."My Dog Has Fleas" ha.ha.

A Kid's Review
This review is from: Johnson Hawaiian Soprano Ukulele (Electronics)
It took forever to get my parents to take me to the music store so that I could pick out an instrument to buy & play!

But finally they did it!

It was not exatlly what I had in mind for an instrument but it's OK.

If I wasn't handicapped I would have played the viola or the saxaphone.

My famliy wasn't very impressed when I played it but they were when they heard my sister, Claudia played here clarinet.

So if your looking for impress your BFF wow that's really cool kinda thing then I suggest "Fender" TM" electric guitar NOT a uke.
