Book Description

A Yale Tercentennial Book June 1, 2001
This unique and richly informative addition to American educational, religious, and cultural history examines the college life of Jews at Yale from the first Jewish graduate in 1809 to the present time, drawing comparisons to the Jewish experience at other elite colleges and universities and to the experiences of other minorities at Yale. In this revised edition, Oren draws on new interviews and references to present the dramatic events of the past twenty years, describing the tensions between majority and minority cultures in an academic world increasingly committed to inclusiveness and the solidification of meritocracy.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

"With this scholarly study Kenney becomes an authoritative, cautionary voice on the close ties binding many universities to some of the world's largest corporations, " said PW of this examination of the historyand the effectsof big business's forays into the laboratories of education.

From Library Journal

Using archival records and interviews, Oren, a Yale graduate currently at the medical school, has produced a thoroughly researched, well-written account of the Jewish experience at Yale from the first Jewish graduate in 1809 to the present. Not only does he chronicle the history of Jews at Yale, but he compares it with the experiences of other minorities at that institution as well as the saga of Jews at other elite schools. The discriminatory quota system and other problems that faced Jews in American higher education during much of the 20th century are well documented. An important work, highly recommended. Leonard Grundt, Nassau Community Coll. Lib., Garden City, N.Y.

This work is very well researched, thorough, and chilling. I myself and my family never knew the details about the anti-semitism against my father as the first Jewish full professor or understood what I underwent.
The subject matter is iconic and suggestive for other Ivy League schools.
It also makes one wonder how much change in these places is cosmetic. A valuable work of great interest to those who went to Yale.
