Biography

A dozen years after the breakthrough debut of Jagged Little Pill, an album which earned four Grammys, sold 30 million records and spawned a dedicated worldwide fan base, Alanis Morissette remains not only an enduringly popular artist, but one whose success stems from a fierce commitment to authenticity and, to an equal extent, vulnerability. Both of these traits enable her to climb to new ground… Read more in Amazon's Alanis Morissette Store

5.0 out of 5 stars Joining You, toned down, April 28, 2005
I'd heard Joining You on the Supposed Former [...] album. I found it overstated, with too much guitar (and I'm a guitar kind of person!). I found this CD Single in a used CD store and bought it on impulse, mostly because of the Melancholy Mix. I found the story of Alanis talking to the younger person about thoughts of suicide to be very powerful. The music caresses the words, and I can hear Alanis' concern for her friend.

These Are The Thoughts was truly a bonus. Her voice and the lyrics combine again to speak with power.

I'm very glad I stopped in the used CD store, else I might not have given this disc a chance.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pretty Much Worth The Money, June 7, 1999
By A Customer
I thought I was going to disappoint myself after spending over $10 for like 2 songs; but this is great! The ballad "These Are The Thoughts" is sill in my head after listening to it many times in one day. The new mix of "Joining You" is really cool as it uses more accoustic guitars throughout. Even the live version of "Thank U" sounds great when the chorus kicks in. Get this, dude.

5.0 out of 5 stars IT'S IMPOSSIBLE FOR MORISSETTE TO DISSAPPOINT HER FANS!, March 24, 1999
By A Customer
Whether Alanis Morissette is doing an album, single, or movie (well, she has a part in Kevin Smith's movie DOGMA coming out this October.), she can never make us worry about her. You know how it is, sometimes an artist releases this awesome album and the next is horrid. Alanis never has acheived such a down-sider yet. She has changed her music throughout from dance to alternative and alternative to easy light rock, but she has never made us cry. But the reason I am writing now is for her latest single JOINING YOU. No matter whether she releases a 17-track CD or a 3-track single, she always gets attention. Her THANK U single rose to the top of fans' collections because of a fantastic b-side called "Pollyanna Flower". This time, JOINING YOU is up there because of "These Are The Thoughts". Yeah, well there have been some thoughts on why this song wasn't put on her latest album. It is fantastic. 'These are the thoughts that go through my head in my backyard on a Sunday afternoon', Morissette sings beautifully until reaching a rising action of questions: 'why do you say you are spiritual yet you treat people like sh-t?...'....'How can you say you're close to God, and yet you talk behind my back as if I'm not.'. It's just our same, young brilliant Alanis Morissette at work. You must get this single! You have nothing to lose, it's almost as fantastic as her full albums!! Also, the actual song "Joining You" is different. It's better than the album version!! (tracklist: Joining You (melancholy mix), These Are The Thoughts (unreleased track), Thank U (BBC radio live edit)
