Tragically Underrated Morissette Classic,
By Busy Body (London, England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Joining You (Sweden) (Audio CD)
It's early 1997, your debut album has sold more than 30 million copies worldwide, you're an overnight sensation, a multi-Grammy award winning household name and expectations for a follow-up album have never been as high. So what do you do? Well, in the case of Alanis Morissette you pack your bags and take yourself off to India to seek out spiritual enlightenment - to 'find yourself' and come back refreshed. Yes, since that infamous and now legendary debut album "Jagged Little Pill" spoke the truth for a generation and spawned a million angst-ridden vixens, Alanis had to make an album that maintained her success and kept her alive in the public subconscious, didn't she? Well, maybe some people thought so, but she certainly didn't. To make an album as well-accepted on a social scale as Jagged Little Pill was going to be impossible, so Alanis laid down the law and, in the fall of 1998, unveiled "Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie" to the world. Typically, critics adored it but the public failed to agree. Yeah, so the album went to No.1 all over the world, but in the end only sold around 8 million copies worldwide. What is considered her most tragic album by the public is actually her greatest masterpiece by the diehard fans. I for one am in agreement of this album's genius."Joining You" was the second single to be released from the Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie album. The song only peaked at a disappointing No.28 in the UK in March 1999. The song also only spent 2 weeks on the chart before slipping off altogether. I see this as a great shame because this really is one of Alanis' best ever songs. The lyrics are amazing, the melody is tear-inducing and the whole subject matter is depressing and uplifting simultaneously. I haven't actually seen a video for this song. If one has been made, I'd be very interested in seeing so! Joining You begins with a deep guitar and Alanis' vocals match this straight away. She sings the first verse with a depressed tone, "Dear darlin', your mom, my friend, left a message on my machine. She was frantic. Saying you were talking crazy. That you wanted to do away with yourself. I guess she thought I'd be a perfect resort because we've had this inexplicable connection since our youth." Her voice then rises a lot and the drums and guitars get louder as she sings, "And yes! They're in shock. They are panicked. You and your chronic. Them and their drama. You this embarrassment. Us in the middle of this delusion." Alanis then sweeps into the glorious first chorus, "If we were our bodies, if we were our futures, if we were our defences I'd be joining you. If we were our culture, if we were our leaders, if we were our denials I'd be joining you." Alanis then moves into the second verse where the beat has picked up a lot and is very catchy, even with Alanis' deep vocals that have returned. She sings, "I remember vividly, a day years ago, we were camping, you knew more than you thought you should know, you said, "I don't want ever to be brainwashed." And you were mindboggling, you were intense, you were uncomfortable in your own skin, you were thirsty, but mostly you were beautiful." Alanis then sings the chorus once more, but it's slightly altered at the ends of each line. The song then becomes all subdued and takes the song's beat back to the beginning as she sings, "You and I we're like four year olds. We want to know why and how come about everything. We want to reveal ourselves at will and speak our minds." The bridge presents itself and Alanis sings in a higher voice, "And never talk small and be intuitive and question mightily and find god my tortured beacon. We need to find like-minded companions." Alanis then sings the chorus again and again, until the end. Alanis knows that the chorus is especially the song's high point, so she uses it in this song to give the most emotional impact on the topic of suicide. Joining You is my favourite song that was released from Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie. It only just beats "Thank U" in my opinion, but it's definitely not the best song on the album - those odes belong to the classics such as "Front Row," "Baba," "The Couch" and "One." I still can't get over how tragically overlooked this single was, along with the album from which it was taken. I guess this is the proof that the public generally don't like listening to thought-provoking and intelligent music. Dumbed-down dance pop and R'n'B has always been the way to go! Anyway, if you want to listen to a fantastic song that does all the things it's supposed to in your head then grab this!

I bought this single because, I wanted to listten to the studio version of THESE R THE THOUGHTS. What a beutiful song! Alanis sounds her best whenever she sings slow tunes! Out of the many Joining U singles, I recommend to buy this one. It has 4 tracks. In my opinion, she's the best song writer!

Joining You is a great single. The melancholy remix puts a different twist to the song. These Are The Thoughts is a simple song but it is really good. Thank You live is sooo awesome, I recommend this CD single to anyone who likes Jagged Little Pill because Joining You is a rock song and would fit nicely on that album. All Alanis fans should own this great single!
