MAXIMUMS AND MINIMUMS
When making loose-tenon joints, the three dimensions of the stock to be joined (thickness, width, and length) determine whether a given jig can do the job. The jig's maximums and minimums are important to know. Will the jig be suitable for every phase of your project? Can the doweling jig handle wide legs? narrow rails? thick boards? I looked at several competing jigs in this price range, and the Joint-Genie is the most versatile in terms of the variety of stock dimensions it can handle. The other jigs, though well-made, were less versatile.

Length
Almost any jig can use the dowel itself, or a bolt, an indexing pin in order to put a series of holes along the length of a long board, for example when joining the boards of a table top. The Joint-Genie uses this indexing approach.

Thickness
Joint-Genie is not a self-centering jig. This is a good thing, not a limitation. Jigs that place dowels relative to a single reference face or edge will produce results closer to perfect, where the perfection matters. You want the boards of your table *top* to be flat so that they do not require much or even any sanding. Using a single reference face will leave the table top flat, and any tiny amount of lippage, from boards that are all not *exactly* the same thickness, will be on the underside of the table, where a few thousandths will not matter. With a self-centering jig, you probably end up with some lippage on the top side too.

If the jig has an integrated two-sided clamp, then the maximum thickness of the stock becomes an issue. Will you be working with boards only, or also thicker legs? Some very well-made jigs cannot handle stock thicker than one inch. They cannot be used with legs.

The accuracy and repeatability with this tool is remarkable.
The only way you could have some sort of mis-alignment is if you did not tighten the knobs or secure this to the work properly.
I have used several other dowel pinning tools and this is hands down the most versatile and the best.
