5.0 out of 5 stars Battle Field I hope you are paying attention.
Let's keep this short and sweet.
The good
Night vision, day-night lighting cycle, bullet drop, thick varied vegatation and functional camouflage (can you say ambush?), varied terrain, fun maps, usefull vehicles, BIG rolling battles, gorgeous/sublime lighting, excellent water (you can even go Rambo and swim under it), duh items like being able to climb up onto...

2.0 out of 5 stars A useful review for you dial up gamers out there.
When you read the blurbs located in various locations on the box it states that:

Breakthrough technology allows you to play on a 56k connection as "smooth as silk".

I read that and thought, "Ahhh, the replacement for Counter-Strike and Battlefield I've been looking for!" Not true. Apparently silk is not as smooth as I was lead to believe...

Let's keep this short and sweet.
The good
Night vision, day-night lighting cycle, bullet drop, thick varied vegatation and functional camouflage (can you say ambush?), varied terrain, fun maps, usefull vehicles, BIG rolling battles, gorgeous/sublime lighting, excellent water (you can even go Rambo and swim under it), duh items like being able to climb up onto rocks and vehicles no need to jump.

The point capture system is more realistic so no more halo drops in the rear by one guy to capture a teams main base (It'll take a team effort to take a point now).

NO PARACHUTES! Nothing more satisifying than tagging a helicopter with a stinger and watching everyone on board fall from the sky.

Vehicles don't magically dissapear after being destroyed and jeeps don't auto explode everytime you run into something.

Snipers are everwhere and quite dangerous, though bullet drop will seperate the men from the boys. Weapons balance is pretty much right on. Various factors such as weapon report, flash, and effective range combined with time of day and server limits keeps the M60 stupidity of BFV from rearing it's ugly head.

Armory (Ammo crates) have time limits on them so no more rocket or grenade spaming.

The Bad
Helicopters are so dumbed down that they are boring (no skill required), but at the same time can you load a couple of vehicles in the back of a Chinook along with 10 guys or have 3-4 guys hanging out of a scout helicopter. Makes for some interesting battles and reinforcements. So basically if all you like to do is fly, and by fly I mean you have to actually have some skills to do so, then this game has nothing to really offer you.

They need to work on the sound some more, the individual weapons don't sound distinct enough from on another and distance and echo effects don't work that well making it difficult to judge distances (Could be my sound card though SB audigy). I would suggest surround sound for better game play.

I'm having a hard time with coming up with more negatives. Very fun game, not as arcade and over the top play as the Battlefield series, but not as restrictive as many of the tactical shooters out there. Currently I only have the demo I would strongly suggest downloading it and see for yourself. (Mine's on order)

5.0 out of 5 stars You want this game!, July 7, 2004
This review is from: Joint Operations: Typhoon Rising (CD-ROM)
After reading a couple of bum reviews posted by others, I chose to submit this review regarding the awesome gameplay I've encountered in JO. True to a few comments I've heard, I do not recommend this game to anyone who doesn't have DSL or a fairly modern video card (and processor-I have an Athlon 2200 and it works fine). Other than that though: you're set. Novalogic has vigilantly released patches to deal with almost all the issues that have come up (very few indeed!) and I've been rocking hard ever since! The maps, the team dynamics, the gameplay itself and easy learning curve (compare this to the near impossible mastery of any aircraft in battlefield 1942) make this a game with lots of depth for newbie and master strategist alike. The fact that you can engage so many people (I usually play on servers that host 70-100 people) at once makes for a more interesting and definitley fun experience. The day/night weather cycels are not to miss and the sheer number of weapons, uniforms/camo, vehicles to drive and maps make this, in my book, the definitive multi-player game out there right now. Pick it up-you won't regret it! just be wary of what it says on the box: although many people were initially turned away by the box reading something about having to pay for a 'premium service' everyting is absolutely free with no monthly fee at all (novalogic has since cleared this up at the official forums for the website) In conclusion, check it out: this game will own you!

Underwear X (if you see me out in the jungle, give me a holler!)

4.0 out of 5 stars Good game, but keep this in mind..., July 1, 2004
This review is from: Joint Operations: Typhoon Rising (CD-ROM)
If you have a 56K connection and you're contemplating spending $40.00 or more for Joint Operations: Typhoon Rising, let this be a warning to you.

If you read the game packaging you'll read the following: "Gigantic MAPS. Battle it out with up to 150 players on maps larger than 50 square KM - never before has a real time war been duplicated at this scale. Breakthrough technology allows you to play on a 56K connection as `smooth as silk'."

You'll also notice on the system requirements: "Internet play: 56K Internet connection required to play. Broadband (Cable or DSL) connection recommended for server hosting."

Here is your warning; don't believe what you read! It will not run "Smooth as Silk" with a 56K connection. You will be warping and jumping all over the map. If you think that you'll have the same game experience as you did when playing Black Hawk Down online you will soon get a major dose of "what the heck is going on here!".

I made my purchase decision based on the first Joint Operations demo. That game Did play "Smooth as Silk" if you had a 56K connection. Little did I know Nova would mess it up.

So you have a couple options:

1. Wait until you have a broadband connection before purchasing the game.

Or

2. Spend $40 (or more) to play the 13 pathetic training missions and then put the game on a shelf and go back two playing Black Hawk Down.

With that said, I finally got a DSL connection and I really enjoy the game. In fact If it wasn't for some very minor problems, it would get 5 stars.

Many people complain about the game play, but a lot of problems come from the players themselves; they don't use "TEAMWORK" which is a must in this game; Rambos need not apply! If you don't work as a team, you won't get much out of it.

See you online - NAVSPECWARCOM (player name)

Don't say you were not warned.

4.0 out of 5 stars Beats Battlefield In My Book, November 1, 2004

First off, beat the system requirements for this game. You will start to lag around 60 players online on an Athlon 1.4 Ghz.

This is a rather realistic team first person shooter. Teamwork is a must for taking objectives. Don't play this game if you want a deathmatch online experience. Team Deathmatch is included as gametype but it can become frustrating since death can come in so many forms and you rarely expect it.

The vehicle physics are very forgiving. I've driven off two cliffs in a Humvee and the vehicle suffered only minor damage. Getting around trees usually involves simply a small twist of the mouse. Forests are easily traveled through in anything but the light armored vehicles. Helicopters are essentially flying jeeps. Don't expect to pull off any crazy stunts or maneuvers. Most vehicles require two people, one to drive and one to fire. Only the attack helicopters can be piloted solo.

Weapons have very good ballistic models. You'll have to range find first if you're going to be a sniper. Automatic fire causes your gun to climb.

I love the realism in the game. City battles are tough and fast. The only annoying bit is that snipers can easily mow down a spawn point. You'll usually die just trying to get the sniper. Tanks sometimes take too many anti-tank rockets to tank down. Sometimes it'll take just one, other times three.

Buy this game if you want a dash of realism but you also want good team play. You'll also get more than just your one life in CS.

I am new to the FPS type games but I like this game alot! To bad they didn't design it for single player to..........I know all the kids love multiplayer now but it takes more talent to write a great single player game than multiplayer! This has some potential for single player missions and campaign so hopefully they come out with a expansion pack soon. I never have played BFV but with all the down talk on that game I didn't buy it especially when your paying $39.99 for a bad game...........if it is what they say so I bought JO: Typoon Rising instead for the same price and I am not disapointed! I have Far Cry and think that is the best FPS out there right now but like I said earlier, this game is great here's why:

Graphics are decent not like FC's but hey who could get a game looking that good!

You can drive any thing you want from BH's helicopters to jeeps and HV's.

AI in training missions is great but has a very weak single player mode: MEANT TO BE PLAYED IN MULTIPLAYER TOTALY!!! so don't buy it if you want to play in single player at all unless you will except a half a dozen or so training missions? It's still fun to try all the different weapons and vehicles and there is even a assult mission or two (one were AI is attacking you and vis-versa) at the end.

Helicopters are very easy to fly and alot easier than BFV of what I've heard?

Huge maps which take forever to walk across-this I like!

Only one CD game: Not five like Far Cry!

Overall, it's a great game even if it is only meant to be played in Multiplayer Mode which it seems that's were all FPS's are going these day's. Not good for the old-timers!

I rate it 4/5 for play and user friendly vehicle controls just like Far Cry's controls-easy!

PS If you want hard vehicle controls go play a Flight Sim 2004, this is combat! and you should be concentrating on that not if you can get a helicopter off the ground!

5.0 out of 5 stars Adult Gamester Loves This One, July 8, 2004
This review is from: Joint Operations: Typhoon Rising (CD-ROM)
I have always felt lost in online versions of BF1942 because (a) traditional strategy, stealth and teamplay were almost non-existent and (b) survival depended on your ability to constantly keep moving and jump around in random patterns, all while shooting anything that moved. I'm 53, old for a lot of these games, but I'm also an avid paintball player who can keep up with the teens and young adults very well in "walk on," big team versions of that game which rely more on stealth and strategy. I've found that many of the same tactics I use successfully in paintball -- and, for that matter, which I learned while in the Army from 72-77 -- work quite well in Joint Operations Typhoon Rising. I'll still learning how to play the game really well, but steadily improving. The game also allows me to play co-op versions offline -- me against any number of opponents. Play one on 10 or one on 20 AI opponents is great practice for my skills, so I like this option. I also think that there's a place in this game for anyone with relatively little practice, so you don't have to feel completely out-played by those who live their lives online. Buy it, you'll like it. And if you see VET72-77 online, let's jump in any vehicle together and rock 'n roll.

5.0 out of 5 stars Novalogic Does it right this time..., June 17, 2004
By
This review is from: Joint Operations: Typhoon Rising (CD-ROM)
I don't know what some people are whining about on the forums. This is a darn good FPS. I played it for about 5 hours yesterday and for a 1CD game, I was surprised at the level of the graphics and content from this game. Novalogic has affiliated themselves with NVidia and this is a bit of a dissapointment for me because I use an ATI GC and I work at ATI, but even on my ATI 9800 Pro, the game looks sweet and runs like butter. I was also impressed with the level of control and realism in this product. For example, you have to calibrate sniping distance using binoculars and then adjusting your crosshairs accordingly. The mortars, grenade launchers, etc.. work off the same principles.

The foliage is rendered brilliantly, even better than BF Vietnam, and I love BF. When shells or bullets hit water, the effect is simply amazing. Flying around in the copters was a lot easier to learn than in BF or Desert Combat. Novalogic decided to keep the flying vehicle controls simple and this is fine with me. Also, it took a bit of an adjustment to get used to the controls, but trust me if you do thee training missions, they become a snap to learn.

Try the demo out and then decide for yourselves if it is for you. Don't listen to too many critics...this game is top notch. Hey, remember how many patches BF1942 had to go thru to get it to what it is today? And yet it still ended up getting Game of the Year awards. I think this one has a lot of potential too.

This review is from: Joint Operations: Typhoon Rising (CD-ROM)
This is by far one of the best games on the net today ! 1st person shooter with a 3rd person twist in it. Need a good video card though and a good connection to the net to fully enjoy the pleasure of this game. Everything from maps to equipment and lets not forget vihicles is all top notch cant say a bad thing about this one Nova realy pulled it of with this title. Up to 150 people in a SINGLE map thats outstanding. Team work is VERY, VERY IMPORTANT and the realism is there no metter what anybody sas. I suggest...GET THE GAME YOU WILL NOT BE DISSAPOINTED.

4.0 out of 5 stars immersive, August 29, 2004
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Joint Operations: Typhoon Rising (CD-ROM)
ive had the game for awile now. you need to patch if you own.

graphics: incredible, nothing like sitting inside a helicopter and see the heat off a rpg that passes by your face while going thru the open doors.
you can disapear in the foilage very easily.
very large viewable distance.

weapons and vehicles: very good balance.

gameplay: you must use exceptional tactics to get anywhere.
with that being said:
you can play every style of fps in this game.
you can play how you would play in R6, CS, ghost recon, you name it.
you can choose to be a sniper and really use stealth. or be a rifleman and co-ordinate a take over. or be silent and infiltrate an area and kill without ever giving away your location.
the game is what you make it.

downfall:
you must work in teams.
solitary killing is alright. to get the serious kills you must work as a team.
you have to use tactics. run and gun gets you killed. you cannot run into the middle of a open area and expect to NOT die. you have to think about your movement, your cover, your place in the overall motion. and especially your enemy. you have to know what he/she is doing, thinking, planning.
you have to bring your ability to the next level of thinking.

this game is better then all of the fps out right now because the number of players (150) adds a element that is hard to define but is understood once you enter an area with 75 badguys trying to kill you. and you have to wonder if you packed the right gun.

Joint Ops is the best online multiplayer game i've ever played! I love the easy contrnls that they usually don't have on alot of the other computer FPS games.the vehicles let you go anywhree really easily, and just about no one cusses in this either(a huge problem in other games, not to mention annying).only problem is that rebels have a downside to thier weapons because im a sniper.and there are a lot of gliches in this game like when you press shift to get out of a helicopter gun or seat and you fall out the bottom of it.but the weapon variety is huge and the vehicles are so easy to control. The grphics are so good compared to most, and the game runs smoothly later on.This is a definite 5 star game from Novalogic.
