1.0 out of 5 stars Not a good book
I bought this book because I plan to buy a jointer/planer. I am not a professional but, in spite of my somewhat low level, the book did not give me much useful information. It is mostly a collection of trivialities, such as instructions for making a stand in mdf board, or 1 1/2 pages with ridiculous instructions on how to remove a motor (disconnect wires, remove bolts,...

I bought this book because I plan to buy a jointer/planer. I am not a professional but, in spite of my somewhat low level, the book did not give me much useful information. It is mostly a collection of trivialities, such as instructions for making a stand in mdf board, or 1 1/2 pages with ridiculous instructions on how to remove a motor (disconnect wires, remove bolts, remove belt, remove pulley if necessary...). There is no useful info on combined jointers/planers. Flowcharts on choice of jointers/planers seem useless. I do not recommend this book to anyone. The chapter on jointers and planers in Duginske's book "Mastering Woodworking Machines" gives much more information in much less space.

This is a really good book for beginners, which is what I am. Very well laid out, very well written. I highly recommend this book for anybody w/ a planner and jointer or anybody in the market for one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great beginner's handbook, October 26, 2011

This review is from: Jointers and Planers: How to Choose, Use and Maintain Them (Paperback)
This is one of few manuals on jointers/planers on the market...it is well written, aimed at the novice, and filled with helpful instruction and tips. I have to disagree with an earlier review that claimed it is filled with useless trivialities; in fact, one of the things I liked best was the plan to make a planer stand! Both simple to build and useful and reason alone to buy this book. In fact, I built one myself...it is a great addition to my shop. Since these machines are two of the simplist to operate, I'm not sure what else could have been included. In short, I highly recommend this book as a welcome addition to any wood shop library.
