4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent album from a young talent!
Wow, this is such a great debut. At only 13, Jojo has an incredible voice and she even takes some credit by writing/co-writing 3 songs. The album definitely has an urban/R&B vibe to it, but it's still pop. Here's my review on each song

1) Breezy - Probably my favorite song on the CD! I love the energy, her voice sounds amazing on this one. A great dance song. 5/5

1) Breezy - Probably my favorite song on the CD! I love the energy, her voice sounds amazing on this one. A great dance song. 5/5

2) Baby It's You - A very infectious song, I love the beats in this one. 4/5

3) Not That Kinda Girl - I like how she sings this song, it has a cool vibe. Not the best track on the album though in my opinion. 3/5

4) The Happy Song - This is a cute song. I don't know what it is, but I'm not a fan of the backround music - everything's pretty repitive. But she still sounds great as usual! 2.5/5

5) Homeboy - This song rocks! I love the style, it has a great R&B vibe to it. 4/5

6) City Lights - I love this song! The lyrics are fun as well as the music. It puts you in a good mood! 4.5/5

7) Leave (Get Out) - Jojo's first single! I love this song, everything about it! It's one of those songs you can't stop listening to! 5/5

8) Use My Shoulder - I love the lyrics in this song, they're really sweet. The song is great, but it doesn't stand out in my opinion. 3.5/5

9) Never Say Goodbye - The ballad on the album. The lyrics are pretty good, but I don't know - the song's pretty boring to me.
1.5/5

10) Weak - I love how she sounds on this song! A nice R&B groove. 4/5

11) Keep on Keepin' On - This the track that Jojo wrote. One of my favorites. The lyrics are awesome! 5/5

12) Sunshine - This is good song, she sounds awesome on it - the lyrics are sweet but kinda cheesy - but still a good track 4/5

13) Yes or No - I just love this song! It definitely stands out for me on the CD, it has some awesome energy like 'Breezy'. The lyrics are so fun and singable as well! 5/5

14) Fairy Tales - A great way to end the CD. The lyrics are cute and original. 4/5

...if they didn't know they were listening to a 13-year-old white girl.

When I first heard that there was a new white female R&B artist named JoJo being signed to Blackground Records, I shrugged it off by saying, "Ah, her album will come out the same time Kiley Dean's album comes out." But I listened to the album and it ain't bad. Unsurprisingly, though, I noticed that a lot of reviewers don't like her, saying that she's too young to be talking about relationships and true love and instead should be talking about fitting in with her friends and doing homework and so on. Seriously, people, would you really want to hear someone singing about things like that? That strategy never works very well; ask Lil' Soldiers. And as far as not being old enough to talk about love, um, ever heard of the Jackson 5?

I don't see JoJo as trying too hard; I see her as a singer that is doing what's in her heart. And there are some very good songs on here, like "Breezy", "Baby It's You", "Not That Kinda Girl", and especially the smooth "Never Say Goodbye". I also think her cover of SWV's "Weak" is exceptional, and although I still like the original a tad better, JoJo gets an A for effort. And "The Happy Song" doesn't look like much on paper, but the way she says the words makes the song stand out.

I named a bunch of great songs, but I still had to knock my rating down from 4 to 3-1/2. This is because while the album starts off strong, some questionable lyrics comes toward the middle of the album, like the bridge to "Homeboy" and the entire "City Lights". The redundancy of "Use My Shoulder" is rather unimaginative; and sorry, but the obligatory keep-your-head-up track "Keep On Keepin' On" is proof that JoJo shouldn't write entire songs by herself any more.

Another problem is that sometimes JoJo sings so hard that she gets too loud and off-key, like on "Sunshine" and the otherwise good "Not That Kinda Girl". But this album still proves that JoJo has talent, and the album is good to add to your collection. I hope she sticks around for awhile.

5.0 out of 5 stars Promising Star, June 22, 2004

A really good R&B album tham i'm sure y'all will enjoy:

1.-Breezy-8-Cool beat and Cool vocals. Is catchy and a bit repetitive
2.-Baby It's You-10-It's going to be her second single. Is by far the most catchy(among Leave). It's a bit child but the rhythm is just amazing
3.-Not That Kinda Girl-8,5-This song was included in the "Leave(Get Out) single. Is a cool song,a grower. The beat is cool and the chrous is awesome
4.-The Happy Song-9-One of her catchiest. This could be a future single!Really like the lyrics and her vocals
5.-Homeboy-7-Is an Ok song, the cool is great though
6.-Citylights-6,5-The beat is simply amazing and the first paragraph is cool, but the song takes a bit boring. The beat could be annoying.
7.-Leave(Get Out)-10-Her first single,is just awesome,i can really relate to it.The beat,the verses,the chrous,her voice...hey,man this song is perfect.
8.-Use My Shoulder-7,75-Yeah i like it,i think it can grow on me more. The chrous is fantastic and the song is pure R&B.

9.-Never Say Goodbye-10-Her first ballad. Is just AMAZING,the chrous is great and her voice shines here. This song HAS to be her next single(after Baby It's You).Really, really sweet.
10.-Weak-7-This is a remake i think, but its cool. This song really shows her vocals but it's a bit long and boring.
11.-Keep On Keepin'On-9-She actually wrote this song. It's about her experiences. It's an emocional track. Not really a ballad, but slower than other tracks on the album.Catchy Chrous
12.-Sunshine-6-She wrote this song too.I'm not very into this song.It can grow on me
13.-Yes Or No-9-Here she reminds me to Christina Aguilera.Actually this song seems to be a Christina's song(Can't Hold Us Down). It's catchy and has a really good tune.Maybe it's a bit repetitive
14.-Fairytailes-8-This is a sweet song, really like the lyrics and the chrous.Slower track

5.0 out of 5 stars How R&B should be, August 20, 2005

Yeah...Jojo is young. And she does discuss a little about grown up problems, but lets face it...she has talent. She brings back a little of the early 90's R&B. And no..she's not being used as a puppet. In fact, she wrote a couple tracks on this album. concidering the fact that she's only 13...I have to give her mad props. Such a young person with a big voice. I'm waiting for the next album. Trust me...anyone who misses 90's R&B and likes music that doesn't only discuss sex, money, and cars, should buy this album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nobody is ever too young to do music, JoJo proves it., July 7, 2006
This review is from: Jojo (Audio CD)
First off I'd like to say too many people are giving her crap for her single, "Leave (Get Out)" by saying she is too young to write about this stuff. If anybody besides me actually looked into this, you would of found that the lyrics are about an older friend who was going through relationship problems at the time. Also, generations are changing. Try to remember that.

On another note, this CD is very good. The best tracks in my opinion are Baby It's You, Not That Kinda Girl, Leave (Get Out), Use My Shoulder, and Yes Or No.

Also, I am not a pop fan-boy. I mainly listen to DMX, Eminem, and 2Pac. This CD is great for a change though!

1.0 out of 5 stars One of the funniest and stereotypical CD's i've seen, May 11, 2005
This review is from: Jojo (Audio CD)
There are two things that this singer needs to realize:
1) She's only 13
2) She's not a rapper

The reason this cd is hilarious is because of the disturbing lyrics. They are oriented in such a way that this girl actually thinks she knows what she's talking about. She goes on and on with relationships and thinks that what she's experienced is actually serious. It's sad that the media actually likes this music, even some adults seem to appreciate. People are losing their intelligence rapidly it seems, because they have women in their 20's trying out for a "super band" singing a song written by a 13 year old. It scares me that this album gets as much recognition as it does, I can't help but think what the masses are thinking today in general.

It's funny because the CD is filled with "homies" , "ballers", and "jewelry", all references which rappers use. I don't really understand why a 13 year old girl like this would be using these terms in the music nor do I understand why she would be putting out material at such a young and illogical age.

All in all, i'm not saying that this girl has no talent. I mean, she may have a good voice at times. However, to a person with a degree of intelligence, the lyrics for her to be using are awkeward, and in my opinion are embarassing. JoJo just needs to learn that she's only 13, and many of the references in her songs are just way too awkeward. If you're going to make a debut album, at least wait until you can come up with lyrics that are 1) meaningful 2)have not been overdone in the past, and 3) not placed in superficial context.

It just annoys me to see these little kids trying to act grown up!!!! What, this 13 yr old girl is singing about boyfriends, breakups, relationships, etc? Come on!! She's only 13! She don't know squat bout that. And she should try writing her own songs instead of trying to make it look like she older just because her songs are talking about this kind of stuff. And I also read an interview of her online, and she was acting like she's all old all ready and experienced life. She said to one question "when I was younger I...blah blah blah!! When I was younger??????? YOUR 13!!!!!!!!!!!

This review is from: Jojo (Audio CD)
i'm a big music lover and i like every kind from jay-z to britney spears to the beach boys and everything inbetween... but JoJo doesn't make the cut.
This is one of the worst and most annoying cd's i have ever listened to. the songs are awful and just hearing them once is torture to your ears, her voice isn't really that good-- theres MUCH better out there, so why waste your time listening to her? not to mention they're terrible again, but JoJo is WAY to young to be singing about all this stuff. Hello-- can she relate to any of this? No. Like at her age she was in a "serious relationship" or the "worst breakup". That doesn't happen in middle school, its just all that stupid "you're my boyfriend & i'm your girlfriend" crap. Most kids her age can't even relate to that. Her songs are terribly unrelatable and not well written or sung, her Cd needs to stop being produced.

2.0 out of 5 stars JoJo...NO NO, June 30, 2004

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Jojo (Audio CD)
First off, allow me to begin by stating that for a 13 year old JoJo has an amazing voice. Her vocal capabilities are far superior to many artists out and topping the charts nowadays. Her debut album on the other hand is not that great. Perhaps it is because I'm 17 and it was made to appeal to a younger audience? But, listening to a 13 year old sing about things she's never really experienced..such as going clubbing...her "man's" spinning rims..going to meet the "love of her lifes" mother.."ice"..and being in "love".. isn't really my cup of tea.
I bought the CD expecting a lot more of the "Leave (Get Out)" vibe but was very disappointed by what I got. Instead, she was trying to come off as some hard @$s trying to be hip and well..I guess you can't blame the girl for trying, but it was not very believable. For goodness sake, she's 13!
All the songs have nice beats..but they all sound the same. Though she's singing very well she never really switches her vocals. Each song sounds the same. If I could, I would've never purchased this album. The only songs I can actually listen to in entirety are "Leave (Get Out)," "Baby It's You," "Keep On Keepin' On," and the remake of SWV's "Weak." Aside from that, the CD is bland. Maybe I should listen to it more before saying these things, but I don't think I can bare wasting anymore of my time.
JoJo gets two stars..one for her great voice, two for the fact that she co-wrote/wrote 3 of the songs on her CD. None for the album. Try again, JoJo. Your voice is hot, your CD is not.
