3.0 out of 5 stars Not too bad....
This wasn't too bad. I liked the fact that there was a story, it wasn't just "he touched her breast, her heaving bosom responded to his breath" or whatever. That gets old.

It was predictable, but not horrible if you like erotica. The "backdoor" stuff isn't too bad either, if you are squeamish about that (raises hand) so don't let that scare you too far off.

things are going to heat up with a card game determining which one will get what they really want.

Kayla Martin has invented a sexual aid which she hopes will take the sex toy industry by storm. It makes perfect sense to share her invention with her best friend and downstairs neighbor Dylan Thompson and request that he help her test the device. Only Dylan isn't as enthusiastic about her newest creation and flat out refuses to test it out.

Dylan is convinced that Kayla has finally lost her mind. There is no way he's going to use her sex toy for men on himself. Even if he was willing to consider trying it, he's seen more than one of her modified creations go haywire and there is no way he's going to risk permanent damage to any part of his anatomy.

It was Dylan and Kayla's late night phone calls that always end up full of sexual connotations that gave Kayla the idea for The Walnut Wand. Dylan loves Kayla's voice and relishes their phone calls, even when she's complaining about her failed dates with yet another loser. After getting off the phone with Dylan, Kayla begins thinking about masturbation which then leads her to doing online research where she learns more about what men enjoy sexually. She really thinks that she has discovered an untapped market and her idea could be the next great thing to hit the sex toy industry. How is she going to get test subjects though if her best friend won't even give it a chance? The next time Dylan sees or talks with Kayla is at their monthly poker game. She uses her breasts to her advantage and ends up winning the game but the high stakes game is just beginning. One hand, winner takes all - if Kayla wins, Dylan has to be her test subject; if Dylan wins, he'll finally get a phone call to end the way he wants - with both of them completely satisfied.

CALL ME is the first book in Lena Matthews JOKERS WILD series and it starts it off with a resounding bang! Kayla is a character whom you just can't help but adore. She's a bit absent-minded, wacky, determined, and completely loveable. Dylan's personality compliments her beautifully. He's level-headed, focused and much to his own surprise, head over heels in love with Kayla. I couldn't help but laugh as I imagined the horror on his face when Kayla casually mentions the nature of her invention and how she wants him to try it out. This story goes far beyond just trying to get him to try out the toy, it really delves into their friendship and the changes that occur between them as they become lovers. Let's face it the sex scenes are just too hot not to pick up a copy and read it for yourself. I could feel my face heating up just reading them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it, October 8, 2007
This review is from: Joker's Wild: Call Me (Paperback)
Dylan and Kayla have been best friends for years. They live in the same apartment complex and share their morning routine. Although they're close, they've never crossed the line into taking their relationship to the next level.

While Dylan goes to the office every day, Kayla stays home and seems to do a few things - work on web sites and also invents "things." One of her inventions is a Walnut Wand - an anal sex toy for men. She wants to try it out on her best friend, but Dylan refuses. How is she ever going to get a test subject for her toy, if her best friend won't even try it?

An opportunity to get Dylan to test the toy presents itself at a poker game. Dylan and Kayla, along with some of their other friends have a monthly poker game (ergo the name of the series). At this month's game, Kayla and Dylan decide to have one poker game with higher stakes than usual - if Kayla wins, Dylan agrees to try out Kayla's invention. If Dylan wins, Kayla will call Dylan and they'll have phone sex, which could change their relationship forever.

What follows is what happens after one of them wins the poker game and how their relationship changes. It's a fun read - I loved Kayla's unconventionality - her clothes don't ever match and she loves to invent "different" things. Dylan is sexy, tending to be dominant, but enjoying every minute with Kayla.

If you like steamy books that have a believable romance and not just sex, you'll love this book. I read this book after reading Joker's Wild - Three Nights and I found this book much better than the second. I loved Kayla who's unconventional but strong and Dylan is hot.

3.0 out of 5 stars An OK read, August 13, 2008
This review is from: Joker's Wild: Call Me (Paperback)
This was an alright read, but nothing for me to write home about. The characters (Dylan & Kayla) were likeable enough, but not as 3-dimensional as I like. Lots of reference was made to Dylan's "dominant" tendencies, but I never saw any of it, unless you consider being jealous as being dominant (which I don't). And Kayla was way to much the typical "klutzy, forgetful, needs a keeper" kind of heroine.
Usually, when I start a series, I'm compelled to finish, regardless. But I think I'll pass on the rest of Joker's Wild.

This first book I have read written by Lena Matthews. I purchased it because it was recommended and the story sounded interesting.

Dylan Thompson and Kayla Martin have been best friends for 5 years. They just shared a few passing words in the hall until Kayla invited Dylan over one night to fix her sink; he assumed that she was hitting on him. After a late night phone call with Dylan, she is inspired to invent an anal vibrator for men, "The Walnut Wand." She approached Dylan to be a test subject; he didn't just say `no', he said `hell no.' She was shocked that he refused, but she wasn't giving up - she would get her way. She tried to exchange favors, but he still flat out refused.

Dylan hosts a monthly poker game in his apartment. Kayla hadn't spoken to Dylan since he told her that she couldn't try out her new invention on him. Dylan was worried he had hurt her feeling, but not enough to change his mind - no way was he being her test subject. Now, she was in his apartment flirting with the other players. After Kayla took all of their money, and everyone had left she challenged Dylan to a winner take all hand. Five card stud, Joker's wild. One hand changes their relationship forever...

I felt that this book started off great, but the story about their friendship seemed to only be filler for the sex scenes. The story is really weak at the end, it rushes to a conclusion. There does seem to be a future story for Chris and Eliza. I was disappointed, the idea behind it seemed good, but the execution was not so good.

4.0 out of 5 stars Funny, Fast Read---- Perfect Summer Read!!, August 7, 2009
This review is from: Joker's Wild: Call Me (Paperback)
The novel grabs you from the go and keeps your attention throughout. This novel is funny, quirky, edgy and filled with characters you will fall in love with! The dialogue is great between the characters and so is the storyline.

This is the first erotic romance I've read and it was a bit much at times to read all the graphic sexual details, but the graphic details didn't detract from the storyline though.

This is the 1st novel in the Joker's Wild series. This also happens to be the first novel I've read by Lena Matthews and I look forward to reading the rest of the books in this series.

This book was fun and enjoyable. I loved the sexual tension in the beginning, I liked the interaction between the 2 characters. There is a lot of sex talk because the main character's invention is a sex toy. I did like that the guy did stand his ground and never tried out the toy! It was a good erotica book; again i read it because it was free. It did leave me giggling.

Kayla Martin has hit upon an untapped market. The manufacturing of anal sex toys! She's created a prototype and just needs the perfect victim....er, test subject to try it out. So of course she asks her best friend, Dylan Thompson to be her first. Oh, um, yeah. This is an anal sex toy for men. Called The Walnut Wand, it's sure to be a hit, if only she could get someone to test it, for Dylan has for some reason refused to offer up his anal cherry to her. So she and Dylan make a wager over a game of poker. If she wins, he tests it out, if he wins, she goes upstairs to her apartment and calls him--for phone sex. Hehe.

Regardless what anyone says, sex changes a friendship. Sometimes it ruins it and other times it makes it better. This is definitely a case of the latter. Having been friends for several years, they both know the others likes and dislikes and their bedplay definitely starts out with a bang. This fun and easy read was a delight to indulge in. Kayla was an extremely amusing, ditzy character who was easy to love and Dylan was a stuffy and bossy male who I could easily see starring in some 1950s husband and wife comedy, where he is the long suffering, yet adoring husband. Kayla's antics were a little over the top-the girl definitely needs a keeper, but still, she landed quite a keeper so obviously this chick was doing something right. ;)

The plot is simplistic, bordering on practically non existent. Kayla wants to be the inventor of the Walnut Wand and she thinks Dylan's stuffiness is what's preventing him from trying out her toy. Or it could be that the last time she "created" something, he ended up being afraid to use the microwave out of fear of what might happen. Kayla is absentminded and flighty to the extreme and I couldn't make myself get upset at Dylan for refusing to stick some untried, homemade anal sex toy up the most sacrosanct inner cavity of his body.

The sex is not overly graphic. This was more of a fun, sexy romp. There is two phone sex scenes that were rather explicit, but phone sex and internet sex always makes me feel dirty. There's something so naughty about it, and it makes me feel like a perverted voyeur when I read it. There is also one extremely hot, blistering spanking scene where Dylan just lit into her.

This was fun and sexy, but not exactly earth shattering. Read this when you're in the mood for something light and fluffy. It will make you laugh and leave you feeling tingly good.

But enough about my review. I'm sure the only thing you inquiring minds want to know is.........Does Dylan try out The Walnut Wand? Well, read it and find out for yourself! ;)

1.0 out of 5 stars Gross, October 6, 2011

I was all for a romance blooming b/t friends. But not a grown man masturbating in his office...His secretary had to open a window & spray air freshner. His co-worker talked to him about the smell too. In a word: Gross. Not to mention the phone sex during a client mtg. Call me a prude but there should be boundaries...in my opinion.
