Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

For the last 35 years, Perú Negro has been a primary outlet for the Afro-Peruvian music tradition. Sadly, group founder Ronaldo Campos died in 2001, but his family has carried on the work, releasing Jogorio, the group's second album of originals and classics since his death. As with all Afro-Peruvian music, listeners will hear touches of flamenco-like guitar and clapping, call-and-response choruses, clattering African hand percussion and actual tap-dance-like dancing. At its most upbeat, the album has a carnival-like atmosphere ("Carnival Negro") where it's impossible not to imagine people dancing. But it's the children's singing on "Villancico Negro" that truly steals the show, proving that this music truly is in the hearts and souls of the people from earliest of ages. Not quite up to the stunning standards of the Afro-Peruvian Classics: The Soul Of Black Peru collection, Perú Negro's Jolgorio nonetheless easily captures the essence of the still-vital culture it represents. --Tad Hendrickson

5.0 out of 5 stars Great music of Blacks in Peru!, January 26, 2004
By
This review is from: Jolgorio (Audio CD)
When I first heard Peru Negro, I was blown away. So much passion, very soulful, and these beautiful melodies off-set with some great rhythms. Apparently, they play cajons (wooden boxes) and a type of rattle made from a donkey jaw bone whose unique sound alone makes this album worth checking out. Anyone who digs Afro-Cuban music will love this unique combiation of Latin, African, and Indian sounds. Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars LO MEJOR DE LO MEJOR, March 12, 2006

¡VIVA EL PERU! y ¡VIVA PERU NEGRO!

5.0 out of 5 stars "chants & melancholic chords has winning ways", January 27, 2004
This review is from: Jolgorio (Audio CD)
Times Square Records presents a diverse and complex release "Jolgorio", featuring Peru Negro with melancholic ingredients serving up delectable cues with a touch of tradition thrown in. We're talking about rich material with an influence of past history and rhythm complete with the passion of its people.

Mixed with melodies and harmonies derive the accent of Afro Peruvian cues that keep the listener within a heartfelt boundary. African, Indian, Latin and European music has evolved into and through 200 years ~ leading us into a rebirth of Peruvian with African blends that come to us like a warm summer breeze.

Entire album is intriguing with a spirit of roots from long ago ~ a message comes from the rhythmic tempo set by each member of the cast. Peru Negro's repertoire brings traditional tracks celebrating the history of Blacks in Peru ~ chants mixed with melancholic chords give off an unfamiliar sound that sets the stage in keeping their origins strong ties ~ an adventure into the past through the music of Peru Negro!

Total Time: 55:42 on 13 Tracks ~ Times Square 9035 ~ (1/20/2004)
