Book Description

June 1998
Our hero needs all his wits -- and a steel jockstrap -- to stay alive in this explosive, action-packed, giddy thriller.

There's a jumpy heiress with a lift in her shoe, the very lovely, very puzzling Travata Hayershot.

There's a Mafia killer, the absolute worst kind, Mad Marvin Molino. A rogue FBI agent, Wilson Pomfret, a.k.a. the Pelican Man. And a frantic, scheming millionaire, Prescott Havershot III.

There's a dead Navy SEAL. A drop-dead gorgeous hooker. A public defender with burning ambitions. A million dollars found in a mattress, and fifty million more in a trust fund.

There's a kidnapping, a ship sunk, two cars blown up; and a fiery helicopter crash. And a couple of murders. Well, make that six.

There's trouble.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Tommy Donahoo takes less than two pages to go to bed with a young libidinous beauty named Travata who meets him at a bar, but from there things deteriorate fast. His fourth adventure (after Juarez Justice, 1996) pits Tommy, a San Diego detective sergeant, against Travata's wealthy influential father, his own boss and a hit man for the mob who shoots a Jehovah's Witness as Tommy watches. The FBI is furious because Tommy and the late Jehovah's Witness ruined a stakeout at the mobster's mansion. When Tommy goes looking for a suspect in another case, he turns up a man killed by Tommy's recently stolen gun. Taking Travata to the crime scene, Tommy digs $1 million out of the mattress. His car is blown up; more murders ensue. It's enough to make him consider joining the witness protection program and vanishing into Cairo, Ill., but even that looks like a trap. Trolley's gonzo cops keep the goofy plot twisting at a furious pace. One detective collects his partners' food scraps for compost. When he deems it necessary, Tommy is not above cuffing a Fed to a railroad track. This nonstop, madcap storytelling delivers great escape reading.

From Library Journal

Police detective Tommy Donahoo (Juarez Justice, LJ 10/1/96) heads one of San Diego's elite police squads, but all his recent luck has been bad. He witnesses a notorious "retired" mobster commit murder and is targeted for mob revenge. He gets "lucky" with a sexy heiress, but her CEO father, who catches them in the act, threatens Tommy and complains to his boss. Then Tommy finally locates a witness in another case, only to be framed for the guy's murder. Rather than submit, the contrary detective instead tempts fate. Humorous situations, briskly paced narrative, and quirk-filled characters recommend this police procedural to all collections.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wild, Funny, Impossible, Like a Bruce Willis Movie, July 10, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: LA Jolla Spindrift (Hardcover)
Living in San Diego, I'm interested in books, especially crime books, set in this city. I don't think jack Trolley knows squat about how the real San Diego police work, and are, but who cares? Donahoo is a Bruce Willis-cop type character, and indeed, this book reads more like a script for a Bruce Willis movie. Absurd and wild things ahppen, like a nutty action movie, and there are plenty of laughs, enough to let you know that Trolley isn't taking himself too seriously. There's some glimmers of good writing as well, and in many ways, Trolley's sty;le reminds me of Jermone Charyn's. I'll have to go read the other books as well, as this one was good enough to make me check out the rest of the series.
