Rhino/Hear Music hit a home rum with this 2010 seasonal entry while pulls together probably THE best 14 Christmas tunes ever given a classic R&B/Blues/Soul approach. Some even became nationally-charted singles for the artists concerned, a virtual Who's-Who of the R&B genre.

The best of them all is the wonderful treatment of Irving Berlin's White Christmas by The Drifters Featuring Clyde McPhatter and Bill Pinkney (which at that time included lead Clyde McPhatter, bass Bill Pinkney, baritone Andrew Thrasher and tenor brother Gerhart Thrasher). In December 1954 it reached # 2 R&B Atlantic 45-1048 (b/w an equally brilliant version of The Bells Of St. Mary's - unfortunately not here) and in subsequent re-releases would chart many more times right into 1967 on the R&B, Pop and Billboard Xmas charts.

The rest aren't too shabby either, and the hits reach all the way back to 1949 and one of the finest interpretations of What Are You Doing New Year's Eve? With Sonny Til leading the way, along with Alexander Sharp, Johnny Reed, George Nelson and Tommy Gaither, The Orioles had this rise to # 9 R&B on Jubilee 5017. Eight years later The Cadillacs (lead Earl "Speedoo" Carroll along with Earl Wade, Charles Brooks, LaVerne Drake and Robert Phillips) covered another 1949 seasonal hit, Gene Autry's Rudolph, The Red-Nosed Reindeer which, with the backing of the Jesse Powell orchestra, made it to # 11 R&B in December 1957 on Jose 45-807.

Into the 1960s we get Carla Thomas using as inspiration her 1961 hit Gee Whiz (Look At His Eyes) for Gee Whiz, It's Christmas, and in December 1963 it finished at # 23 Xmas on Atlantic 2212.

Really handpicked funky tunes here, not a snoozer among them. I woke up to this record in my alarm clock for months which shows you how listenable it is. I think that though this is a Starbucks issue, it's mostly tunes culled from the set "R&B Christmas" which is a Ryko release. This collection bears that Ryko air of quality curation.
