Jonah Hex Vol. 1: Face Full of Violence is the BEST!!!! The art work and story telling are top notch. I read a lot of graphic novels. My favorite series is the Punisher by Garth Ennis and this ranks right up there with it. Trust me when I say you will not be disappointed in Jonah Hex Vol. 1: Face Full of Violence.

i've been collecting this book since issue one hit the shelves several years ago now . i'm going to the trades now . somewhere in the middle forties (issue wise) . the series has seen lots of different illustrators (much to its credit to my mind) . just one set of great writers though . have there been ups and downs ? sure . it's not without flaw , but i sure do love the book . if you'd like a departure from or an addition to the super hero titles , i'd strongly suggest you check out this series . any graphic novel . it's very fun and tranporting . if you like westerns , you'll be hooked .

A trade that stands out from the rest,

In a comic medium of decompressed stories and multi-part crossovers, Jonah Hex completely exposes an old school tradition by crafting clever, witty and meaningful stories in stand alone issues. Justin Gray, Jimmy Palmiotti and Luke Ross are able to take a classic DC character, in a under appreciated genre, and captivate the audience. This collection offers readers a little taste of what the monthly title has been able to deliver on a monthly basis. Very happy that I've been getting the monthly title but this trade will sit on the bookshelf with some of my other titles.

One of the most underappreciated characters in one of the most underappreciated genres in comics gets resurrected and reinvigorated thanks to the writing tandem of inker Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray. A duo who worked together on a series of holiday-themed Punisher one-shots (none of which were anything if at all to write home about mind you), both writers are firing on all cylinders with Jonah Hex: Face Full of Violence, which collects the first six issues of the revamped series. Instead of focusing on one continuing storyline, Face Full of Violence contains six seperate stories all involving our favorite scarred outlaw, as he pursues kidnappers, has run-ins with those from his past, and generally takes on all comers without blinking an eye. The stories themselves are gritty and violent without going over the top in terms of gore and profanity (this isn't a Vertigo title, it's under the DC banner), but it retains plenty of attitude and a mature tone that isn't seen in mainstream comics too often these days. The art by Luke Ross and original Jonah Hex artist Tony Dezuniga is nothing short of great, making an already sweet package even, well, sweeter. All in all, if you dig old western comics or have fond memories of a man named Hex, this is a must own.

I have no doubt that Jimmy Palmiotti's Jonah Hex is the greatest cowboy hero in the history of comics books, ever. This character and these stories are greater than The Lone Ranger, The Vigilante and any other cowboy character from the golden age, silver age or otherwise. What Palmiotti does here is represent an Old West that is dangerous, thrilling and accurate. He portrays the characters at times as a loose canon and other times as the mysterious traveler. These are self contained stories that will turn you into a Jonah Hex fan, if you aren't already. 5 Stars.

Scarface,

After being impressed by the Gray/Palmiotti Jonah Hex: No Way Back I decided to give the collected series a try. Although I have known the character Jonah Hex for years, I have never really read any of the comics and this was my first foray into a regular series.
"Jonah Hex - Face Full of Violence" collects issues 1-6 of the ongoing series. Although some of the stories are connected, there isn't really any continuity; the series is written like Robert E. Howard's Conan series with random adventures pulled from the life of a traveling warrior. Luke Ross does the artwork for most of the book, with original Hex artist Tony Dezuniga contributing one issue. Normally that puts me off a series. I hate reading a collected edition with a rotating artist staff, but both Ross and Dezuniga have a unique take on the character and I enjoying seeing their different styles in juxtaposition. My favorite story in this collection was "False Accusations," which teamed Jonah Hex up with fellow DC Cowboy Bat Lash. Having Bat Lash appear showed me that this was really the DC Universe Jonah Hex, and not some twisted Vertigo alternate version. Also, the dandy Bat Lash was a good counterpoint to Jonah Hex's grim posturing. I also loved "Chako Must Die" which again paired up Hex with a more light-hearted companion. And it was good to see that not EVERY story in the series is going to end with Hex walking away alone from a pile of corpses. My only complaint with the series is with Luke Ross's art. Well, not really with his art, which is beautiful. He does a realistic approach to the series, with a cinematic flair so that it almost looks like movie stills. But his Jonah Hex is clearly Clint Eastwood. Like really, really Clint Eastwood. So much that it takes me out of the series, and I don't see Jonah Hex as Jonah Hex but as Clint Eastwood playing Jonah Hex. If this had been done a little more subtly, I think I would have enjoyed the effect but instead it is like Ross is banging me over the head with a hammer saying "See! See! I made him look like Clint Eastwood, because Eastwood made all those cool cowboy flicks. See!" Yes, I see. Now turn it down a notch. That aside, I loved the series and am looking forward to picking up the next collection.

Jonah Hex is still making a killing,

I'm a long time reader of Jonah Hex from years ago when it first came out. I was very disappointed with the way the artwork in the Hex series basically ruined a fantastic character and comic series.
I was NOT disappointed by Face Full of Violence. It is 100% pure Jonah Hex all the way and the artwork is great just like the original series was. Great stories, great artwork and inking, I hope they make a hundred of them because I would buy them all. If you've read any of the original series, this is a must buy.

I remember Hex from the day, this Hex looks a lot like Eastwood...but still has (some of) the spirit of the original HEX. I wish they would bring the old back in a colour compilation.

Never fails.,

Once again the team of Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti deliver with the goods. In the wake of western shows like Deadwood taking off DC has brought back probably their most prominent western character Johna Hex.
Now this is where I say something prolific and inspiring to make you want to buy the book. The truth is, it's more then worth it and even if you're not a western fan, like myself, the books still worth it. It had depth, great character moments, and the pretty art you all go crazy for. Buy it damnit. |
