Fun, But Not Completely Singable,
By Mark Baker (Santa Clarita, CA United States) - See all my reviews (TOP 500 REVIEWER) (HALL OF FAME REVIEWER) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Jonah: A Veggietales Movie (Audio CD)
Big Idea's first full length movie gets a complete CD all to itself. 7 of the tracks are instrumentals from the movie's score, but the other 12 are songs from the movie. My biggest complaint is that we get a few half songs. "Bald Bunny" and "Steak and Shrimp" are really more pointless then normal, even for Big Ideas. However, these are off-set by the songs recorded by regular Christian artists. "Second Chances," straight from the movie and sung by Anointed, is a fun toe taping song. Chris Rice provides all 12 verses for "Billy Joe McGuffrey." Relient K does a wonderful cover of "The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything." I'll admit, it too me a couple listens to fully appreciate it, but I love it. Probably my favorite is "In the Belly of the Whale" by Newsboys. It makes me laugh so much. Of course, there are songs recorded by the "veggies" on here as well. The best song related to the movie is "Jonah was a Prophet." And if you're looking for this movie's version of a silly song, skip to "Credits Song." I was laughing so hard when I first heard it, I had to pull my car to the side of the road. I'm not usually a fan of soundtrack albums, but I'm certainly glad I bought this one. The songs I've highlighted make it more then worth while.

You know you're hooked when...,

...when you let the kids listen while driving them to school, and then turning it up louder once they've left. "Pirates", "Billie Joe McGuffrey", and "The Credits Song" are great songs. While the movie score is missable, it doesn't detract from the rest of the album. Very catchy, but yet it doesn't get tiresome.

Toe-stepping Hilarity and More.,

This album is the soundtrack to the first successful motion picture hit from Big Idea Productions, JONAH: A VEGGIETALES MOVIE. The Veggie Tales videos are great to watch whether you're a kid or an adult because they operate on so many different levels of humor and wit. Yet, I have to admit I was very excited when the first Veggie Tales album came out a few years ago because the songs in the stories are so memorable. I was just as excited when I recieved this soundtrack for Christmas. Some of my favorite tracks on the album are: "Steak and Shrimp" "It Cannot Be" "Jonah Was a Prophet" "Billy Joe McGuffrey" "Credits Song" "Steak and Shrimp" really isn't a song, but is more of a ditty, but is hilarious. "It Cannot Be" is one of the more moving songs in the movie and reminds me of "Close Every Door" from JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT. "Jonah Was a Prophet" is the big dance number that closes the movie, while "Billy Joe McGuffrey" contains all the verses to that catchy song sung by Chris Rice. Finally, "Credits Song" is just that, a song about the credits that really has nothing to do with the credits. This album is a great item for any Veggie Tale fan, but is also an amazing piece of children's music and just a decent overall soundtrack.
