Jonathan Shines on the 2nd Hit Album!, July 27, 2000
This review is from: Jonathan Butler (Audio CD)
This just as a note is NOT Jonathan Butlers 1st Album. His 1st Album was actually released 7 years earlier and all of the songs were instrumental.
This is a 1 to 10 scale of my thoughts of the album's songs
1.Lies (9) a total radio classic with nice vocals and nice chorus
2.Love Songs,Candlelight, and You (8) A Beautiful Melody and nice Chorus as well. Fine Guitar playing in the opening
3.Going Home (10) The 1st sign of the perfect song is an instrumental with stunning beauty and grace. You find that when you listen that you have a South African drum sound and a fine acoustic setting.
4.I Miss Your Love Tonight (8) Yet Another Radio Track but this is definately not my favorite song here
5.Holding On (10) By far my favorite song. When I was 2 i think when my mother 1st got this on cassette i can recall dancing and trying to snap my finger to this upbeat fun and soulful track
6.One More Dance (9) A nice song with a nice chorus and nice melodic tone
7.Take Good Care of Me (10) A Very Romantic slow song that has a nice impact on love
8. Barenese (10) Another instrumental with a very emotional melody
9. All Over You (9) A Song that has a good hook and a very sexy premise
10. Overflowing (7) Another Radio friendly track
11. Loving You (10) A Lovely melodic, lonely love song
12.Sunset (10) Another Beautiful instrumental
13.Say We'll Be Together (10) a nice song with nice guitar work and good keyboarding
14.Give a Little More Lovin'(8) Another Radio Friendly Song
15.Reunion (10) a great "south african" sound to this instrumental. Sounds as if it was played at a party with chattering in the beginning and ending
16. High Tide (10) The last track to a phenomenal Album is a nice treat at the end!
Produced By the Great Producer and V.P. of Jive Records Barry J. Eastmond!

A Finely Crafted, Well Balanced Album for All Jazz Lovers!, August 5, 2000
This review is from: Jonathan Butler (Audio CD)
I own this gem in it's original Double Album format have cherished it for more than a decade now! This self titled opus is that rare release that pleases not only jazz enthusiasts, but pop/R&B lovers alike, without sacrificing the integrity of it's craft. The two biggest hits of course were "Lies"( a top-notch soul track with live jaunty horns funky, bottom-heavy bass playing and some of Mr. Butler's finest scatting/guitar playing) and "Take Good Care Of Me", a refreshing take on romance and fidelity that never seems to sound old or dated. The remainder of the album is flawless, brilliantly played jazz, my personal favorites being "Barenese", "High Tide" "Sunset", "Reunion" "Say We'll Be Together" and the lovely "Going Home". An exceptionally strong second outing for this gifted young artist who has only gotten better over the years. A welcome additon to any serious collection.

I first saw Jonathan performing live with the Capetown Coons (in the then Salisbury, Rhodesia) when he was 7 years old and I was just 4 years old and I've been hooked ever since. I have listened to his music countless times over the years and still enjoy each album. His live performances are also worth seeing. Definitely worth purchasing his music if you love soulful jazz.
