Book Description

April 1993
If you're planning for a successful retirement, this Guide will help you gain and maintain control over your financial future regardless of the uncertainties facing many people today. Organized for easy use into 32 chapters, each dealing with a topic of vital importance, and written in an easy-going conversational style, this manual covers every important area of personal financial planning, including: laying the groundwork for a secure future by maximizing what you will get from Social Security, your company retirement plan, and your investments; building and protecting your wealth base by constructing an "all-weather" portfolio; seeking out the right kind of insurance to protect your life, your property and other assets; minimizing your current tax exposure, maximizing your tax deferred investments, and passing on your estate undiminished to your heirs; and enjoying your retirement years to the utmost by making sound decisions regarding changes in lifestyles, places to live, and latter-year activities. The author's common-sense advice helps you accumulate the extra savings you need to overcome inflation and other uncertainties, including volatile investment markets. The Guide will also help you understand the many other changes taking place that will affect your financial life, and provide you with the information that is essential to take advantage of new opportunities and to avoid problems. The book deals with life events that can have an impact on your financial well-being, such as: increasingly common late-life divorces and remarriages; problems associated with learning to live as a widow, widower or a single; challenges and risks of starting an after-retirement business; taxpitfalls to avoid in selling the family homestead; and the sensible approach to seeking and choosing a nursing home. In addition to showing you how to protect your money and make it grow, the author also warns you of things you shouldn't do, like putting money into risky portfolios o

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Pond, the financial planning pundit of the Today show, aims this title at well-to-do people over 50. It fairly cries out for a glossary, as Pond uses terms like alternative minimum tax without really defining them. The style is dry, and Pond assumes a knowledge of terms and an ability to calculate that executives chiefly have. The book contains useful checklists and an excellent section on trusts, and the index (not seen) will be useful for finding topics of interest, since it is hardly recreational reading for the average person. Some information here, such as what happens when an heir renounces an inheritance, is not included in most financial planning books. This book belongs in a library serving older patrons who take their investments and their money seriously and who already know some financial terminology.
