Book Description

“Trust in who you are and who you need to be. That will allow you to trust only those that SHOULD be trusted because you will be able to see in them those things that CAN be trusted.” - Jonathon Reed and the Thirteenth Crystal Skull by Darrin Mason.

The earth begins to shake and the city of Atlantis begins to crumble. Twelve priestesses take twelve of thirteen crystal skulls to pre-determined places around Atlantis before it is destroyed forever. A mountain of rubble buries the thirteenth skull and it appears to be lost for all time. But it is not. It is found and passed from one generation to the next until James Gee, a spiritualist with a secret past, comes into its possession and gives it to a teenage Jonathon Reed. When the crystal skull disappears from Jonathon’s bedroom, he finds himself drawn into a web of lies, deceit and murder spun by the man who promised him a life of love, light and spirituality and instead helps turn him into a killer.

3.0 out of 5 stars Indiana Jones meets the Da Vinci Code June 24, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
I did enjoy it for the most part. Things were always happening; shoot outs, double-crosses, fleeing from death and so forth. The ending was also great - it surprised me, so points there.
My major criticism is that the plot confused me at times. Events would often occur and I had no idea if it was a dream or reality, particularly when the narrative skipped five years in the future then back again. I spent a great deal of the book confused, although by the end I was getting the hang of it. For instance, Jonathon sees a vision of James' death several times and initially I thought this was actually happening. At another stage, Jonathon wakes up to find his dead father, a nun and a priest with him. I still don't know if that actually happened (perhaps his father faked his death?) or if it was all in his head. Perhaps italicising dream sequences and visions may have helped me keep events straight.

5.0 out of 5 stars great read April 15, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A non-humor book by my favorite writer of humor? I had to read it to believe it and I'm glad I did. It is a great read full of YA wonder. This is a fantastic story of spiritual growth with a twist in the tail that will blow your mind. Recommended.

Darrin has written a fast-paced YA story that touches on the spiritual. The ending twisted and turned in a direction I did not expect and I will not spoil it for ypu. Overall a wonderful and enjoyable read.

3.0 out of 5 stars It's okay July 7, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I think I was looking a little bit more for Indiana Jones. It was more good against evil, and that is not a bad thing. Not going to spoil the ending. You may like it more than I did, so I don't want to dissuade you from reading it.

More About the Author

Darrin Mason has worked much of his adult life as a freelance cartoonist (he is an Australian Cartoon Award winner) whose work has appeared in a number of Australian newspapers and magazines (People magazine and The Truth newspaper to name but two) and as a producer at 4BC radio in Brisbane, Australia. He is one hell of a funny guy with a dark sense of humor who now writes stories that make as much light as possible of the things he finds there. Above all else though, he is a fan of Batman. (The 1960s TV version, the late 1980s/early 1990s Michael Keaton version, and the Christopher Nolan/Christian Bale trilogy are the only ones that matter. You can forget the rest). As the Metallica song goes, nothing else matters.
