4.0 out of 5 stars Jonesin' For "The Jones Boys", January 4, 2012

This review is from: The Jones Boys (Audio CD)
The majority of the jazz recordings collected under the "Original Jazz Classics" (OJC) series umbrella are albums from the vast Prestige and Riverside catalogs, but there are a few exceptions. This CD is instead a reissue of a Period Records session, which in turn was part of the old Everest Record Group. "The Jones Boys" was the brainchild of jazz critic Leonard Feather, who brought together six Joneses, all unrelated, for an enjoyable namesake jam session. Thad is on trumpet, Jimmy on piano, Jo on drums (instead of Thad's actual brothers Hank and Elvin), Eddie on bass, and on two selections, Reunald on trumpet and the legendary Quincy on flugelhorn. This 1957 session is fun and whimsical -- a favorite track is the Rodgers & Hart standard, "Have You Met Miss Jones?" -- but certainly not essential. If you find this now out-of-print title inexpensively, then you too should get a jones for "The Jones Boys."
