4.0 out of 5 stars Blast From The Past, September 14, 2005
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Jones in the Fast Lane, Cd Rom Software, By Sierra (CD-ROM)
This was one of my favorite computer games growing up. Jones must learn to live on his own including obtaining jobs from the agency such as a fast food worker, manage his bank account, find living arrangements...etc. This game does not compare to the video games of the present in terms of graphics and "excitment" level but it is a timeless game. The game is fast paced which did help the excitment level. Now I am just in the market for a new clean crisp copy of this game. Hard to find but worth it esp. if you grew up in the Oregon Trail days.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Game of Life . . ., September 16, 2011

"Jones" is an intriguing pastime, partly because YOU decide what wins. Before the game begins, you are presented with a couple of areas: Money, Education, Happiness and Status. You decide which one(s) will determine the winner. If you put all the Success points into Money, then you need to acquire a certain amount of wealth to win. If you split the success points between Money and Status, you will need to acquire a fancy house and car in addition to a slightly smaller amount of earned income. You can divide the points between all four in whatever ratio you like, give 0 points to Education or Happiness, etc. It's all up to you.

Once you've decided what wins the game, you begin playing. You start out as an unemployed high school graduate. Each turn is one week. You decide how to spend your time: looking for a job, going back to school, relaxing in your apartment, etc. You can spend as much or as little on each of these as you want. (Fortunately jobs are easy to obtain IF you have the necessary education and appropriate clothing. The casual wear you purchased is fine for a fast food job, but no one will hire you for a sales or executive position.) If you don't stop to eat or rest enough, eventually you get ill and can't work / go to school. You get the idea. It's a fairly realistic simulation of life after high school, but at the same time entertaining.

I came across this game a couple of years ago and installed it on our classroom computer. In spite of the fact that the graphics were nowhere near "cutting edge," my students enjoyed Jones a great deal. Partly I suspect because THEY decided what would win, not the game. Also, there's some sly humor in your interactions with the NPC's.

Since "Jones" didn't really fit into any existing game category, and doesn't seem to have had a large marketing push, it faded quickly from the marketplace (although I picked up a remaindered 10 year old copy for a few bucks at Office Depot).

Although the protagonist is a high school graduate, it's suitable for all ages. IIRC there were one or two bits of mildly suggestive language that will most likely go over the head of younger children. (One of the other reviewers gives the only example I can remember.) I estimate the interest level would be for those 9 and up. Think of it as the original "Oregon Trail" (I stopped after after the third edition, so I don't know what the later versions are like) but for contemporary life instead of pioneering. Or try to imagine "The Sims" if it had come out 10 years earlier.

Although it's essentially a single player game, it's worth searching out as something the whole family will enjoy, particularly if you can pick it up inexpensively.

While i nevered "owned" this game when i was young, i remember going next door and playing this game for hours. Now that i am 23 college kid, i have found it again and am able to run the DOS ver. in Vista. there is a program called DOSbox this allows you to do this. This game will keep you coming back to it, because there are so many different things that can happen and it is ALWAYS changing, there are just so many different things that can happen within one game. it is true in saying that it is not nearly close to today's gaming standards, but i actually think that this game could be more complex, or rather it keeps u playing. Just because you beat it once going for broke, does not mean you would play again. This game came out when i was 7, so i was young, and now when i play it i catch some of the hidden meaning that characters say, have you ever had a bank teller tell you "thank you for depositing on us"? as a kid i never thought twice and anything in this game, i mean come on, if u forget to buy clothes the one guy have black bars across his package and his nipples. have fun!!!
