Book Description

Jonny Bails, Key West’s favorite beer-guzzling, barnacle-scraping street performer, has a night-fishing problem and a penchant for finding bales of marijuana, and trouble. One day, he discovers that he has contracted an unusual case of bioluminescence. His fingers and other extremities begin to emit subtle blue-speckled glows of light.

Jonny Bails speculates on the several scenarios that might have resulted in his rare condition. He works to understand the condition and use it to his advantage, while juggling a new relationship with the short-stayed tourist called Leila. And he must fend off his arch nemesis of the Mallory Square performers, The Biggest One Man Band (or The BOMB, for short) who will stop at nothing to steal the bioluminescent gift.

Once Jonny Bails gains control of his new power, he is able to use it to his advantage. But as with many cases of sudden fame, Jonny is a target. Along the way, he has run-ins with questionable doctors, scheming lawyers, and friends from the past before he finally bumps into an old philosopher who has a few eye-popping answers for him.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not worth the time March 8, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Although the story line sounded promising, the writing was mediocre at best. I persisted in finishing the book so that I could be fair. Most of the book was plodding. I'm a fairly fast reader, but I had trouble getting through this one. The last third was a bit too fantastic and took on a different life.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting September 24, 2013

This was a very entertaining book. I initially picked it because a friend's husband wrote it and was pleasantly surprised with the storyline. I think part of the intrigue was having no idea what the book was about so ill leave it at that but it was worth the read.

3.0 out of 5 stars Perfect Title for this Book September 12, 2013
Format:Paperback
*I received this book free from the author in exchange for an honest review.*

This book is set in the fun an entertaining Key West. The atmosphere is perfect for the main character, Jonny. He thrives in the "party-goers paradise". As a single man he lives the bachelor's dream: sex, drugs, and rock n' roll. Until a woman walks into his life and everything changes. Leila brings out a side of him that he's never known. His bioluminescence side.

The beginning is extremely slow and I kept asking myself, "Where is what I'm reading leading to," but it eventually gets there. The storyline has a unique mix of friendships, romance, and science. The characters and their personalities come alive, and they mostly stay true to the nature of the story.

The unique bioluminescence aspect is intriguing and keeps you reading.

My Favorite "Secondary" Character: Booker - he is interesting with a lot of character. I love the way he takes care of Jonny and his natural ability to turn any situation into a pleasant one.

My Favorite Part: Jonny and Leila's first fishing trip. It was downright magical.

5.0 out of 5 stars A story like no other June 21, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A Florida Keys tale of bioluminescence and love. Musician and ne’er-do-well Jonny Bails is living song to song and joint to joint in Key West. A late night dip in the ocean and a one night stand with a tourist leave him glowing both literally and figuratively. He’s picked up a condition that gives him the gift of bioluminescence, and he’s been cursed by feelings of love for Leila, a one night stand. Jonny struggles to both understand his sudden illuminating talents and his newly discovered ability to fall in love. What is a poor glowing Florida Keys boy to do?

This is a Sci-Fi book like you’ve never encountered. I’m somewhat reluctant to even call it a Sci-Fi novel. It’s a character driven story that makes it a multi-genre vehicle. It’s got a little Carl Hiaasen feel to it mixed in with a tiny bit of Alan Dean Foster. Setting and the laid back mood of the book make it a truly fun and unique read. I give it a big recommend. If you like debauchery at the hands of a skilled storyteller, this is well worth the read.

What a great book by J. Lee Glassman! With the novel set in the Florida Keys, Glassman describes the setting perfectly. He puts the reader right into the story, where they can soak in the sun and party along with the characters of this well-written book.

Jonny Bails has a lived an interesting life prior to the start of this book, but with one midnight swim with a newly found love, Jonny's life gets flipped upside down. This book has it all - music, lots of drinking, a little smoking here and there, and of course love.

Will Jonny Bails ever be able to reconnect with a woman that is more than a one-night stand? And what exactly is the luck of the bioluminescence? Dive into this book for a great adventure!

5.0 out of 5 stars Do you like SoFlo fiction? December 19, 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Anyone who enjoys a well written book set against the backdrop of the sunny, casual FL Keys, is going to enjoy this off-beat, original story from this new author. It starts off with immediate action, and employs a pretty original story line. I look forward to more fiction from this author.

Jonny Bails was a really fun and entertaining read! Reading this book after recently taking a trip to the keys, I felt like I was back on Duval St. and Malory Square. Glassman has such a great feel for the keys and the ocean. Loved the details of the music in the book also. Overall a great book, great characters, and a really fun story! Would definitely recommend it. Looking forward to more work from Glassman!

Loved the book. Really got me thinking. Loved author Robin Cooke and this book is so much better. I couldn't put it down. When it ended , I was hoping for another book to continue the story of the characters I had grown to love. Can't wait for the next Novel by Glassman. Music, sex, key west and cool Sci Fi ...what more could you ask for!
