5.0 out of 5 stars 3 episodes of Jonny Quest, April 18, 2005
This review is from: Jonny Quest:Pirates from Below [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This is not 1 but 3 episodes on one tape! In the first episode "Pirates from Below" the Quest Team flies goes on an underwater mission. It starts out when Dr. Quest is testing his new "Underwater Prober", and it attracts the attention of a mysterious enemy submarine that is not registered to any country. It turns out to be modern day international criminals. The episode features a wealth of futuristic gadgets: a hydrofoil, and two-way TV handheld, communicators. It also has vehicles called hovercraft, but they fly above the surface of the water without touching it. The chase scene with these is awesome. First aired on January 14, 1965 on ABC during prime time, it was the 18th episode aired.

Next in "The Invisible Monster", the Quest team is called to a secret island research lab where a scientists experiment has gotten out of control - he has unintentionally created a gigantic invisible creature. This episode is a real treat, and is regularly picked as the second favorite of all Quest episodes. Creepy sound and atmospherics, as the team can see the beast making footprints but can't seem to slow him down. Gadgets include a Vertical Takeoff and Landing VTOL plane, over 30 years before the Osprey. The gang has also brought along flying rocket-belts or jet-packs. First aired on January 28, 1965, it was the 20th episode aired.

The next episode is "Werewolf of the Timberlands", taking the team to the Canadian northern wilderness in search of a rare type of petrified wood. The Canadian government has asked for help from the famous Dr. Quest in tracking down the wood. After being warned by the locals, they encounter a mysterious and deadly werewolf. First aired on January 7, 1965, it was the 17th episode.

Jonny Quest is an action-adventure-spy cartoon series from 1964-65,. The reasons for the shows success are simple, a dramatic storyline with realistic characters that travel the globe solving mysteries. Unlike most cartoons of the time period, it took it's audience seriously rather than talking down to kids. It had gentle humor just the same. Lots of hi-tech gadgets and transportation, as well as local culture, and a jazzy soundtrack made it one of the most exciting shows ever released for kids. (This copy was released in 1990 by Hanna-Barbera Video/Warner Video, prior to a 1996 release of other episode videos from Turner Video/Cartoon Network. That later set has cleaned up images and two episodes per tape. If you are a big fan, check the 2004 release of the boxed dvd set, containing all 26 episodes.
