pleasing to the eye,
By figurative artist... (Saskatoon, Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Jonvelle (S) (Hardcover)
If you are interested in photography that celebrates the femaleform, this book is a good start. You won't see anything profound butthere are some worthwhile pics. For the most part I would describe these images as a man's view of the intimate settings he may encounter with his beautiful lover. The models he uses are all borderline supermodels and therefor he may be considered to have sacrificed realism for aesthetics, but so be it. As a whole; there are some images that I found to be cheesy and cliche, but for the most part Jonvelle(s) is a pleasure to experience. In no way is it pornography in my opinion, but if this book is to be left on the coffee table, expect disapproval from any hardcore feminist visitors.

Beautiful b&w photos, beautiful printing,
By A Customer
This review is from: Jonvelle (Photography) (Hardcover)
As I'm beginning to expect from Konemann, this book matches the extremely high quality printing and beauty of their books. I bought the book because it is so beautiful, and not so much because of the actual content of the photographs. It's a photographic work -- apart from some "introductory" text in English and German, the book is filled with large black and white photographs with no captions or text. Most of the photos are full page, with the occasional two-page photo, and a fold-out section in the middle. All of the photographs are of women -- sensual, mildly erotic. Heterosexual males will probably find the book very attractive.

A large wonderful book, filled with elegant black and white images that celebrate the female form. Full page photos that are a delight to the eye, and pleasing to the mind. Much softer than Kroll or Stuart; these photos leave something for the imagination to digest.

You people don't "get" it.,

For all the people that severely criticized this book, you just didn't "get" it. It was not his style or intention to take pictures that are amazing in sharpness, focus, stunning print quality. .etc. What jonvelle tried to capture was that sense of mystery, natural allure, and spontanety of sensual women. The pictures are supposed to be casual and unpolished--that's the look he wanted. If you want tons of minute detail, go buy an Ansel Adam book or something. Seriously, it's like complaining about Monet, Degas, and Renoir's paintings being "unrealistic."

The most stunning collection of beautiful Elles,

Maybe I don't get out much, but I found this book breath-taking. Some of the pictures are pornographic, some are just casual, but they are all tastefully exquisite. If you like beautiful women - the curve of a neck, a moue on the lips, an eyebrow, a venus - you will look at this again and again. Both my straight and gay friends love it. One said, "Gee, I thought *I* had a good job until now..." Another said, "Remember, Sid, not all French women are this good-looking."

Everday Beauty,
By A Customer
This review is from: Jonvelle (S) (Hardcover)
Jonvelle has captured the everyday beauty of his subjects in a"conversational" style that lacks the pretense of many otherphotographers of this genre. Taking this approach, he presents uswith a series of photographs that are very good, pleasing to the eye,and with excellent composition. This is a useful book for new &young photographers studying to develop their own style and want adifferent take on the nude, and also just to have on your coffee tablefor the beauty of its own sake.

So beautiful, so cool.,

This is beautiful stuff. Lovely girls looking happy and at ease in front of the camera. Not one picture looks contrived. Cool yet erotic. A very casual elegance to this book. I am a big fan of black and white nudes, have many books. This is one of my favorites.

He Tries Too Hard,

I love the visual style of this book. The large, grainy photos break almost every rule of conventional photography. It ends a voyeuristic reality to the book that's delightful. However, his models ruin it. They, in most of the pictures, are too aware of the camera, they play up to it. This turns the book into something I'd expect to see as a B&W spread in Penthouse. The images in which he and the models relaxed and quit trying to make a photograph are wonderful. Unfortunately, there are only about ten of these images in the entire book. It's an interesting look into the genre.

Too ordinary,

both in term of expression, technique, and print quality. For those who enjoy casual photos of semi-naked girls, this may be the reason for buying. The models are not particularly attractive, I would say. The print, again, can probably be done in our own darkroom.
