Anyone buying this book should be warned right from the start that it operates on a difficult to understand premise that is no fault of the authors: Joomla itself is updating about roughly every six months. Whether this is a disservice or not to Joomla users I do not know, but this book is about Joomla 1.6, not about the two versions currently available, Joomla 1.7 and Joomla 2.5. By the time you buy this book it will probably be out of date, Despite the fact that everyone, it seems, who writes books about Joomla claims that they all "basically work the same way", they do not. So this book is simply not useful for Joomla 1.7 or 2.5, because it is based on using the sample sites and templates included with some versions you down load. There lies the big problem. Whatever you may have learned in 1.6 does not necessarily work in 1.7 or 2.5 as the sample programs that form the basis of so much of this book do not necessarily respond correctly to 1.6 commands when they are actually 1.7 or 2.5. In addition, the windows may be entirely different and called something different than in 1.6

Another very basic problem with this book is that it skips over one click downloaders as though they do not exist, and it's core contention that downloading Joomla to your computer will be easier than working with it on a server is debatable. I personally haven't encountered difficulty working with Joomla on a server, but as you may suspect by this point, I gave up on this book and moved on to others.

The third, and I think fatal problem with this book is that it does not seem to progress in any order I can understand. Joomla is actually not a website builder per se, but actually a program to construct websites within a SQL data base. So a lot of what you do in putting together a site using Joomla is not too far removed from what you do when putting together a database. The rather scattered and unsystematic way the author presents things does not seem to even give a hint of the structured approach you really need to make Joomla entirely care free.

Speaking strictly as a beginner, this book has moved off my shelf into my books to give away box and I am now using other more structured and more current books to teach myself Joomla. It may be that someone would react well to this author's particular way of presenting material; it may be that someone could also learn Joomla from an outdated text that also instructs you on how to obtain Joomla in what may be the most difficult of several way. All of this may be true, but none of it was in my case.

Information is presented out of order and in confusing groupings. Installation is confusing and has steps missing or has "you can figure it out from this" instructions. A book for dummies should be simple and straight-forward - this book is neither!

When I received it, I did a quick review and wondered if I were dumb enough to need this book. By chapter 4 I realized I was, indeed, dumb enough. I started learning wonderful things about Joomla! 1.6, enough to successfully modify a template, something I really needed to learn. I'm still learning from the book, so it isn't a "one-trick pony." As with all Joomla! training, it starts with installation, which for someone who has seven Joomla! sites running seems a bit of overkill, Joomla! for Dummies progresses quickly enough that I didn't feel it was a waste of time.

This book is for an OLD version of Joomla.

I am very frustrated by Google's lack of mandating that book descriptions specify edition (you had to read the book cover to find it) and in the case of software, also a mandate on explaining which software version was covered.

Thus the book sounds good, but no info on how much Joomla has changed from version 1.6 (or when it was current) vs 3.01 which is currently available at Nov. 12, 2012.

A cynic might think that Google wants to hide the info about how old the book is so you will buy it anyway.

Thus I skipped this book. I searched and could not find any Joomla 3.x books except one available in April, 2013 which is 5 months from now. So, why get Joomla when you can't get any current books on it?

The book does what it says - with it I was able to get up and running a Joomla site in very little time. It has served as a useful reference with many great examples. While it isn't the best Joomla book I've read (I typically buy two 'tech manuals' of a topic at a time) it is extremely useful for the less tech-savvy. The chapters are laid out intelligently and each chapter identifies clear and obtainable goals.

My only criticism is the "10 lists" towards the back - The book addresses Joomla 1.6, the latest version, having been released sometime in January. In an effort to capitalize on this they released the book as close to that as possible - however, the lists are specifically for Joomla 1.5 installs. This isn't really the author's fault as the latest version is pretty new and many of the Joomla 1.5 resources haven't been updated (and some apparently won't be updated) to 1.6

Great for a beginner.

After being handed a troubled project to complete at work, this book saved me hours and helped get the project back on track and competed. Like all of the 'Dummies...' books this one is well organized and well written. Great resource if you are just working in the Joomla! environment for the first time, as well as, a perfect reference to go back to after working in Joomla! for a while.

Clearly writting with hands on practical examples and you're never forced to follow the chapters as they are.
So it's also perfectly usable as a reference guide for beginners.

Nice work !

The Joomla for Dummies book was all I could ask for. This is a great book to help someone begin to learn how to use this great website development software.
