This is a really great play yard that is safe, strong and stable. I did a lot of research in search of a suitable "containment" area for my busy one year old and am really pleased with this choice. This thing is built super strong and I like that it does not have a weight limit, unlike my Graco Pack n' Play's 30lb limit. My son is now almost two and the Room 2 really does provide a large and safe play area for when I am trying to get that time in to clean up around the house and cook dinner. It is spacious enough to put several toddlers in it at the same time and because it is bigger my son seems to tolerate playing in it for longer periods of time. It is also very easy to set-up and collapse down since I mostly use it on the weekends. Yes, it is heavier than the Pack n' Play, but I also know I will get several more years of use out of this play yard with a rough and tumble growing boy. So, keep the Pack n' Play for portability and trips out to grandma's house, but get the Joovy Room 2 for every day use in and around the house.

We've owed our Joovy for over 3 months now and it has been a sturdy and portable playyard. It packs easily in the carrying case and is fairly easy to set up and use. The only drawback has been the rotten smell of the fabric as soon as it was taken out of the packaging, (which smells similar to dried vomit in my opinion). After 3 months of "airing out" I had hoped that the smell would go away but it persistently lingers. Overall this is a decent product but I recommend that it be used outdoors or throughly cleaned with soap and water before use.

As as amendment to my previous statement, I would like to say that I contacted Joovy Customer Service through their website and notified them about the smell of the play yard. Joovy was proactive and helpful in correcting this mishap and sent me a replacement product that didn't smell. Thank You Joovy! :)

At some point over the last 30 years, playards went out of vogue for their intended purpose: a place for baby to play. Maybe it was the Sears movement of the 70's or the general trend toward more permissive parenting and freedom to let babies and small children "explore the world." Now they're used almost exclusively among my friends as portable travel cribs, instead of as places to play, because people seem to think it's somehow cruel to have your baby "confined" to a playpen. I went along with this attitude with my first child, in part because I lived in a house that was more easily baby-proofed -- i.e., rooms with doors that could easily be gated, carpet on the floor, etc. When my second child came along, we were living in an open floor plan house with ceramic tile flooring. It's simply impossible to create a safe space in our family room / great room / dining room space without putting up a humongous fenced-in gate area that would ruin the room for the rest of us. (We do have one area of the house that is exclusively for the baby and is gated as such - but it's not in view of the kitchen! an important deficiency!) I desperately needed an old-school playard, bigger than my Graco which was really only big enough for sleeping.

This playard is the perfect solution. It sits right in the middle of our living room so the baby can see everything that's going on. It can easily be wheeled into the dining area or into a corner at night for storage. There's enough room for him to crawl around and play with several different toys at once. He doesn't see it as confining or if he does he doesn't seem to mind. He plays in it for up to an hour at a time without getting fussy. The mattress is very cushy and the sheet that goes over the mattress is VERY nice quality, thick knit material.

UPDATE: Changed review to 5 stars, old 3-star review first, then my update.

I'm giving this item a 3-star review. It's coming with a LOT of caveats, because you might find that the downsides far outweigh the upsides. I've considered sending this back to find something easier to use. For now, we're keeping it because we think we'll like it over time.

I have a 3-month-old, and recently began using it, so this review is with less than 10 uses. (I'll try to remember to update down the road.)

The downsides:

1) It is a pain in the neck to set up. I *think* that it's getting easier after the first few set-ups. Chalk it up to a learning curve on our part, but I do think there's some "breaking in" happening with the locking mechanisms, so it truly does feel easier. No lie, the first time we set it up, it took three people: two to bear down on the ends, and the third to pull up on the locks. I have recently been able to set it up on my own, but it wasn't "fast." The upper ledges of the structure have three pieces: two bars that run from each corner to the locking mechanism in the middle of the piece. You have to snap the bars into the locking mechanism by yanking (and I mean *YANKING*) on the bar, while holding the lock. Often I can get one bar into the locking mechanism, and have to fight to get the second one in.

2) It is a pain in the neck to break down. There is a button on the bottom of the locking mechanism that you depress to free the bars. I have pretty good grip strength, and was so frustrated the first time I tried to break it down that I made my husband do it, and I walked away. Since then, it has gotten easier to depress, but I still get frustrated with it.

3) It is heavy.

4) It's not a standard size.
