5.0 out of 5 stars The real McCoy
These are the real McCoy, right down to Joplin's own tempo recommendations (the famous "Not too fast" adornes the Peacherine Rag, as in the original). If you want to tackle the master's own works, this is the place to go. Schirmer does a fine job in cataloging these masterpieces, and these are re-engravings of the original scores--crisp, clear and easy to read. This...

1.0 out of 5 stars Binding problem
The binding of this book is such that pages don't stay open when playing on the piano -- they want to close. One would need to put a heavy object or use a clip to make the book stay open. Publisher should change binding. First time I see this with a Schirmer title.

This is the greatest book I've ever seen on Joplin pieces. These are not for beginners!

5.0 out of 5 stars a must have for ragtime lovers, August 31, 2007
This review is from: Joplin - Complete Rags for Piano (Schirmer's Library of Musical Classics) Vol. 2020 (Paperback)
this product is a great convenience. It compiles all of Joplins rags in an easy-to-read format with authentic tips for playing each individual piece. It is definitely worth every penny; it's a great addition to any collection. Another interesting thing that this edition includes is the date that the piece was composed. If you want to find some awesome, fun music to play, you can never go wrong with Joplin.

If you are an advanced piano player looking for authentic ragtime, this is the perfect product for you. This book has an awesome selection. It's pieces are pretty much the original compositions and are definitely challenging. I have not seen any finger numbers printed on any of the pieces, so if you are really dependent on that you might be dissapointed. Great book!

This review is from: Joplin - Complete Rags for Piano (Schirmer's Library of Musical Classics) Vol. 2020 (Paperback)
This book is almost complete, as other reviews note. It lacks a few marches, not technically rags, but they're basically the same kind of song. It is the best scores for Joplin, as it doesn't have the trills written in, so you get to improvise, which is the heart of Joplin.

This book lives up to its previous reviews. It's technically accurate, and there's no guesswork or concern that it's a "different arrangement". It is, as one other reviewer said, "The Real McCoy."

I have had this book for 8 months and I am 3 down, and almost 50 to go...hahaha. I'll spend the rest of my days on this earth trying to learn the Genius' works. :-)

Anyone who has studied piano knows and loves Schirmer's.
This has all the beloved rags which you can look up by first measures in the index.
Buy it.

I've always enjoyed listening to "The Entertainer". This style of music has always been of interest to me. With this volume, I can begin to learn how to play this.

It isn't an easy task, and it takes time. It isn't "typical" classical composition. This is rooted in some very complex polyrhythmic ideas and will challenge elements of your independence between right and left hand.

Don't expect to be knocking these out any time soon, particularly if you are at a less than intermediate level. Even then, be patient and you will be rewarded with some amazing tunes to play. Then memorize at least one of them for sharing when you're out and about. It will impress.
