I bought this on spec, being a fan of Marilyn Mazur's work and also having some familiarity with Ars Nova and the Copenhagen Art Ensemble. It is a beautiful piece of work, full of sweeps of sound. It swings and it soars. At times it is a full-on big band, reminiscent of Mingus and his 'Black Saint And The Sinner Lady' but with a more contemporary and (understandably) definitely European feel, and at other times it is arresting art music. If you like music that is engaging, challenging and beautiful you'll love this. If it were on ECM it would sit comfortably alongside all those other beautiful, inventive mostly European jazz and chamber sounds.
