Jorge Ben's best 90s album,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: 23 (Audio CD)
Prolific Brazilian superstar's 1993 (1994 globally) offering had a lot to live up to; coming hot on the heels of a hugely successful series of concerts in Brazil that culminated in the 'Live in Rio' album release of 1992. The album spawned a chart hit in Brazil in the form of the funky 'Alcohol', but it's the other single release 'Engenho de Dentro' that really carries the album. The song was to become a staple of his live shows for a good while after, and also surfaced with dance mixes the following year on the 'Ben Jor World Dance' remix album. With a host of Ben's older albums surfacing again in (much anticipated) remastered editions, Warner Music Brazil have seen fit to re-issue this album (un-remastered) as part of the Warner Arquivo series. Slick, funky and well produced with odd flashes of brilliance but admittedly not in the league of albums like 'Jorge Ben 1969', 'África Brasil' or even 'Bem-vinda amizade'; nevertheless, for me certainly, it remains his strongest 90s offering. Collectors beware: the original US pressing of the album annoyingly has the track titles listed in English rather than their original Portuguese.
