Book Description

May 1986 Bloom's Modern Critical Views
The work of Jorge Luis Borges intrigues steadily increasing numbers of readers outside of his native Argentina. The complexities of his narrative structures compel the reader to view his stories as labyrinths as he constructs a centerless system of symbolism. This text examines his work through the eyes of some of the best modern critics.

This title, Jorge Luis Borges, part of Chelsea House Publishers’ Modern Critical Views series, examines the major works of Jorge Luis Borges through full-length critical essays by expert literary critics. In addition, this title features a short biography on Jorge Luis Borges, a chronology of the author’s life, and an introductory essay written by Harold Bloom, Sterling Professor of the Humanities, Yale University.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 9 Up-This slim volume is filled with useful information about the acclaimed Argentine writer. Beginning with an editor's note and introduction by Bloom, and moving on to biographical information about Borges, the book focuses on five of the author's most studied short stories: "Death and the Compass"; "Tlon, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius"; "The Immortal"; "The Aleph"; and "The South." Each chapter contains a plot summary, a list of characters, and previously published critical essays. Lists of Borges's other writings, principal translations in English, books and articles about the writer, and an index of themes and ideas are appended. The critical essays are not included in their entirety, but are extractions of longer pieces. A helpful study guide for students.
