This review is from: Jorrocks' Jaunts and Jollities (Kindle Edition)
I read this as on Kindle and enjoyed it immensely. Having previous experience of Surtees sporting works through "Mr Sponge's Sporting Tour", I was pleased to find Surtee's hero Jorrocks in fine fettle. He takes us on a sporting tour of 19th century life by means of foxhunting, stsg hunting , shooting, horse racing (in Paris), trips to Margate and Herne Bay. There are vivid descriptions of the enormous meals enjoyed and the good wine and ales. He must have had an iron constitution (and liver) to survive
There are fascinating insights into life in Dickensian London which complement the latter author perfectly. |
