From School Library Journal
Grade 5-8?The first page of this brief biography will catch the interest of even reluctant readers, as it describes the shackled 17-year-old future poet, Marti, facing the horrors of prison after he opposed Spanish rule in his native Cuba in 1870. West ably highlights important events of his subject's life, while also incorporating historical background of the period. Quotes from Marti himself add insight into his personality and character, and the writing style is lively and interesting. Reproductions of old family photos lend authenticity, although some are understandably dim or hazy. One page is devoted to the poet's most famous work, "La Guantanamera," which is reprinted in both English and Spanish. The bibliography includes books about the Spanish American War, the history of Cuba, and two books about Marti himself. A short but informative biography of a creative, courageous revolutionary.?Phyllis Graves, Creekwood Middle School, Kingwood, TX
