Rheinberger: Liechtenstein's Own Son...,
By Sébastien Melmoth (Hôtel d'Alsace, PARIS) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Josef Rheinberger: Nonet, Op. 139; Sextet, Op. 191b (Audio CD)
.Rheinberger is perhaps the greatest son of the wee principality of Liechtenstein. Student of Franz Lachner; teacher of Horatio Parker--(Ives' teacher at Yale), Rheinberger was a very competent but calm late-Romantic. He wrote a number of fine chamber works, but the Nonet is undoubtedly his masterpiece. Rheinberger's Nonet (1884) follows the example of Louis Spohr's Nonet (1813) and Franz Lachner's Nonet (1875); there's something of the feel of Brahms' Serenade (Op. 11) which was originally written for Nonet ensemble. Brahms: Horn Trio/Serenade in D With deliciously idiomatic instrumental part writing, Rheinberger's Nonet is a substantial chamber piece of >:30mins. Of course, Consortium Classicum is one of THE top-flight chamber ensembles, and MD&G's sound is excellent always. Rheinberger: Complete Chamber Music .
