Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 2-4AJosefina, nine, is a Mexican girl who lives with her older sisters and father near Santa Fe, NM, in 1824. In short related stories, readers are given glimpses of the girls' daily lives. Since the death of their mother a year ago, Josefina has found comfort in caring for the flowers that the woman planted near a well. She shares her fear of a goat and events surrounding the arrival of her Aunt Dolores, whom she has never met. The relationship that develops between the aunt and Josefina is touching and believable. The descriptions of the characters, landscape, and adventures are humorous and colorful, and the illustrations flow well with the story. After the story, readers are given brief information about Mexican/American history at the time. Many young girls will love Josefina.ASelina Gomez-Beloz, New York Public Library
