5.0 out of 5 stars Osmond shines in Canada's "Joseph"
I have to admit, I purchased the CD of this version of "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" mainly out of curiosity over Donny Osmond's performance as Joseph. Well, he is superb. His voice is clear and strong, and he delivers outstanding renditions of the character's songs. The rest of the cast in this, the 1992 Canadian version of this musical play,...

3.0 out of 5 stars A good plan C
If you loved Donny Osmond in the video, you won't be disappointed with him in this recording. His performance as Joseph was just as outstanding in 1992 as it is to date.

However, if you were enamoured by Maria Friedman's performance in the video or Laurie Beechman's performance in the original cast, you may be disappointed by Janet Metz in this version. Her...

5.0 out of 5 stars Osmond shines in Canada's "Joseph", July 14, 2001
This review is from: Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (1992 Canadian Cast) (Audio CD)
The rest of the cast in this, the 1992 Canadian version of this musical play, also does a fine job.

"Joseph," with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice, is a consistently entertaining CD. The lyrics re-tell the story of the biblical patriarch Joseph (found in Genesis 37-45), and Rice sticks remarkably close to the source material. "Joseph" has many inventive and humorous touches (such as making the Pharaoh sing his part a la Elvis Presley, or having Joseph's brothers break out into a calypso song).

"Joseph" works because of its combination of a compelling story, clever lyrics, and superb music. If you have heard other CD versions but have not listened to this one, check it out.

5.0 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL!!!, July 27, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (1992 Canadian Cast) (Audio CD)
I had looked at all of the Joseph tracks to be sure I got the right one. I didn't like the voices of certain characters on the other cd's. I LOVE this one! I had gone to see the musical just a week or two ago and loved it. You don't even really need to see the musical, the cd tells the whole story. I would recommend this CD over any of the others. Fanastic!

5.0 out of 5 stars Get set for the video-- this show is a blast!, June 29, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (1992 Canadian Cast) (Audio CD)
As an owner of all three "90's revival" Joseph albums (USA, UK, and CA), I'll say that this version, origionally produced in Toronto by Livent, inc. is very impressive. And Webber presumably agrees-- Donny Osmond has been chosen to star in the video version of the show (similar to last year's CATS) which supposedly is meant to be filmed this summer and released this winter. And I have to admit, Donny Osmond's performance is amazing. For instance, of the three recent albums, he's the only Joseph able to hit the high C at the end of "Close Every Door" (perhaps the show's most moving number). The quality of his performance has to be seen and/or heard to be believed. If you haven't seen any version of the show, the three 90's versions are all well executed, and each has it's own charm.

"Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" is nothing short of AMAZING!!I have been in the show twice and hope to do it again because it is so much fun.I've never gotten to see the broadway version but I listen to the soundtrack ALL THE TIME.It's the greatest musical ever and Donny Osmond makes a terrific Joseph. Also Janet Metz has a beautiful voice, and she fits the part of the narrator perfectly.I can't wait to get the video tape because I know it will be amazing.

While Janet Metz isn't the greatest narrator for "Joseph", Donny Osmond is the perfect "Joseph." Those who saw this production will thoroughly enjoy re-living it as they listen to the songs on this CD.

From the infectious "Any Dream Will Do" to the moving "Close Every Door", and the humor behind the reggae "Benjamin Calypso" and Elvis-like Pharoah's "Song of the King" you'll find yourself singing right along.

This is fun CD to own. Do yourself a favor and order one.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Joseph" Review -- Narrator Critic, November 30, 2000
By
Diana Adlam (Toronto, Ontario ( Canada)) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (1992 Canadian Cast) (Audio CD)
I must say, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat has been apart of my life for the past 10 years. My fascination with the production began when I was in grade 11. My school put on our own production of "Joseph" where I played the role of the narrator. Ever since then I have fallen in love with the show. Since that time, I have seen EVERY production that has come to Toronto (where I live) and I have heard a number of different versions of the soundtrack.

I feel that Donny Osmond's portrayal of Joseph is a definite "ten out of ten"!! He truly is amazing in that role. The Narrator (I have a special place for this role in my heart --> since I was the narrator in high school)is best played by Janet Metz, although Deborah Gibson (aka: Debbie Gibson --> 1980's teen pop star) comes VERY VERY VERY close for first place in my mind. Deborah recently played the narrator in the production of Joseph that ran from June 1999 - February 2000 that travelled to various cities in North America. Patrick Cassidy played Joseph in this tour group.

I also have the "Joseph" video. Maria Friedman does an alright job as the narrator however she could learn a thing or two from Janet Metz and Deborah Gibson. Maria does not come across as someone who truly embrasses the role as have previous narrators.

With respect to the soundtracks: Canadian Cast 1992: Very Good London Cast 1993: Good American Cast 1993: Very Good (although Michael Damian is NOT as good as Donny Osmond)

Overall, I feel that thsi performance is truly outstanding and I can't wait for the next time it returns to Toronto!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Music, February 4, 2001
This review is from: Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (1992 Canadian Cast) (Audio CD)
This is the second CD that I have of this musical...I also own the movie version with Donny Osmond. In my opinion, the movie version is by far the best, but this version is definitely close. You can tell how Mr. Osmond "grew" into the role when you compare the two recordings.

There is nothing overly remarkable about this CD, it isn't much different from the other one I have. However, the music is still fresh (no matter how many times you hear it) and the casting is good.

I can still recommend this CD, no matter how many others you have of this musical.

5.0 out of 5 stars Any Dream Will Do!, January 15, 2000
By A Customer
I saw this show 3 times with Donny and recently saw it twice with a different "Joseph"--there is no comparison. Donny brings feeling to the songs that no one else could. Duets with the narrator gave me the chills. His voice is as clear in person as it is on the CD.

My 6 year old and I sing all the songs and my 1 year old dances along. Listen to the words--it's very funny. If you are a dreamer and want a fun, magical musical that everyone can enjoy--this is the CD for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Webber and Dazzling Donny, September 1, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (1992 Canadian Cast) (Audio CD)
I've owned this version of Joseph for a while and can say that it's the best recording of the show I've heard (and I own many).

The new music is more up beat than every before and Donny Osmond sounds great. The cast is a joy to listen to and once the CD's played the whole way through you can't help feeling bright and cheerful!

Great cast, great music and great lyrics. If you're looking to buy any version of Joseph on CD, then make it this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Cast Recording Overall, April 15, 2004
By
Joey E "Joey E" (Kennett Square, PA, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (1992 Canadian Cast) (Audio CD)
This is the best overall cast recording of the three revival cast recordings available. After hearing (and seeing in Toronto Canada) Donny Osmond as Joseph, you won't want to hear anyone else in that role. I have all the other recordings of this show, and this is by far the best recording. True, the orchestrations are a bit electronic sounding, but then again, this is Andrew Lloyd Webber and the orchestrations make the best of the available instrumentation. The songs are uncomplicated, the lyrics are playful and witty. Janet Metz as the narrator can be a little wearing on the ears after awhile, but I personally like her performance the best of the three revival casts. The American cast with Michael Damian in the lead is a joke. And the British revival cast recording is mixed differently so that all of the performers seem to be soft and lost within the orchestra. If you want just one cast recording of Joseph, this one is the one to get!
