Editorial Reviews

Review

What a pleasure to read and study this new book by Lawrence Schenbeck.... The writing is filled with great passion and understanding that, in my opinion, accurately describes Haydn's unique place in the history of choral music.... In chapter ten, "Performance Practices," the author discusses issues such as the size of choruses and orchestras used by Haydn and his contemporaries, training suggested for singers of the time, and the ornaments used during the Classical period. The entire chapter is based on the most significant treatises of Haydn's time by Leopold Mozart, Daniel Gottlob Trk, Johann Quantz, and C.P.E. Bach.... Any performing musician, whether orchestral, choral, pianist, or singer, who deals with music from the Classical period should cherish this informative chapter.... The author's discussion of Haydn's nonuniform articulation ... will bring new life to many performances. -- Choral Journal, Aug. 1997

5.0 out of 5 stars A Masterstroke, April 30, 2009
This review is from: Joseph Haydn and the Classical Choral Tradition (Paperback)
This IS the holy bible for the music of Haydn. It is equal in footing to the great tower of Handel's Dramatic Oratorio and Masques by Winton Dean. It is to the Classical music era that Dean's is to the Baroque era.

No conductor, singer or musician should attempt Haydn until they have read this masterstroke. This is not a book for the unlearned in music but is to be digested by those who know music on a deep personal level. It is a rich investment into the performance practices of not only the Classical music of the time but also in the practices of the use of music in the church.
