great idea but...,

I liked the concept of avoiding cross contamination of food and love the look of the self contained storage unit for these boards. It is attractive enough to sit out on the counter or stores nicely in a cupboard. The boards are nice but... Here's my "but", the cutting boards are just too small in size for real meal prep. If you are used to working with a small cutting board, then this will work for you. I'm not and find the small size a bit frustrating.

I am so dissapointed in this set, while it looked great and I love the idea of color coded --I unfortunately did not use them until after my "return period" had ended. I have only used the green one for vegatables and w/ chopping tomatoes, onions and guacamole the entire cutting surface of the board now has DEEP cuts in it--this is just from ONE use mind you! I cannot imagine if I had cut meat or something that would have required actual "cutting pressure" --be sure to save your money or if you do "risk" it do not be like me, too busy to cook for a while, due to our joyous new baby, and get stuck with a terrible quality product especially given how much was paid!

Personally I would not recommend these boards for anyone that is a serious cook. My friend is a culinary student studying to be a big time chef and she left one of her expensive knives at my place. When I used her knife on one of the boards I ended up with some slashes in it. However with my own regular quality knives they hold up fine. I usually only cook for 1 (myself. Occasionally I'll cook for 2 people) and most of the stuff I make comes from books like "make dinner in 15 minutes or less" so- I'm no cooking fanatic. I just wanted boards that would prevent contamination of foods while still being space-saving and functional. These fit the bill perfectly. For me the sizes of these boards are perfect and it was one of the reasons I got it. I don't have a lot of counter space and I can't lay out huge cutting boards. Plus I don't need huge cutting boards when I'm only cooking for 1 or 2 anyway. However if I was regularly cooking for more people the size of these would likely be too small for food prep(each measures 12 x 8).
This would make a great gift for a grad student or someone who's just moved out on their own; who wants to save money by cooking their own grub and doesn't have a lot of space to spare. I wouldn't give this set to someone like a mom with kids or any type of person that lives in their kitchen or uses top quality knives and fancy techniques. For someone like me however- these are pretty much perfect.
