Joseph the man, virginal father of Jesus, June 17, 2010
This review is from: Joseph the Silent (Paperback)
I've read about the life of Joseph from several sources, starting with the little about him in the Gospels as well as meditations and speculations about his life and role as Jesus' earthly father through the writings of several mystics. This book gave me the best window on what he might have been really like, not an ethereal abstract figure from art or just any old man chosen to guard and provide for the Christ Child. He was manly and strong, hard-working, just, virginal, an ideal father and husband, wholly dedicated to God. How could he be all those things? How can we develop an appreciation for this man so silent in the Gospels or even assume to know about him? And why should we? Gasnier uses information from the Gospels and knowledge of the times and culture to paint a wonderful picture of St Joseph. I have a new, much stronger appreciation for him after reading this. He's an the man God chose to father His own Son, and the purpose of his life like Mary's is to shine a light for us: on fatherhood, marriage, and Christ Himself. Easy reading, good mediation material. ~Rebecca
