Product Description

For space saving kitchen solutions the Fold Flat Grater is an essential. A box grater is an important kitchen tool. It spends a great deal of time in the sink or in the dishwasher because it's used so often. Whether we're preparing nachos, quesadillas, soups or salads, a grater is a must. But try storing that box grater in your utensil drawer, not going to happen. But, with the Fold Flat Grater, it will. Have course and fine grating blades in the space of a single flat grater. Grater folds completely flat for easy storage. To use, simply unclip at the top; the grater pops open to create a traditional box grater. The side comfort grip handle makes grating over food easy. The fine and course stainless steel blades are perfect for grating cheese, vegetables and nuts. Then, wash Fold Flat Grater is dishwasher safe. Fold unit flat and store practically anywhere; flattened grater measures 7 by 7-1/4 by 0-1/2-inch. With kitchen space at such a premium, why lose it to a big bulky grater when you can have a Fold Flat Grater. White.

Customer Reviews

Does exactly what it is supposed to and locks in place for compact storage.
Nancy
If I hold it by the handle side it works but I am not comfortable having to hold the grater open with one hand while I grate with the other.
Lma
Holding the grater while grating though is a pain, it needs to click into the open position as well as the collapsed position.

Stays folded very well but does not lock in the open positiion. You need to hold it open with one hand and grate with the other

The grater on this item works, but you need to hold it with one hand and grate with the other. This can sometimes be hard to do. I wish it had a lock so you could lock it then grate.

I am very unhappy with the grater due to the fold flat mechanism. I have used box graters for many many years and have an appreciation for the damage they can cause to fingers due to errant grating. This one has extremely sharp blades which would be quite desirable should the unit a/stay open w/o so much pressure and b/perhaps have some rubber coating on the bottom to help it stay open and not slide around on the counter or cutting board. BTW it locks closed for storage but I feel it should lock to stay open!

The FIRST time I used the grater, I grated off a large enough chunk of my index finger to require urgent care [$20 copay] and $30 dollars in wound care supplies. It also entailed wearing a rubber glove for 10 days for all cooking, bathing etc tasks. I had to seek medical care because the wound was so deep it would not stop bleeding even after 1.5 hours of pressure. My friend, whom I was cooking with, refused to use the grater and had to finish cooking my dinner while I sat w my hand raised, soaking through gauze pad after gauze pad. I am sorry to be explicit but it was horrible. It should also be noted that I was grating Jarlsberg, a softer cheese that did not require very much pressure to shred.

And what makes it worse it I took the time to complain to Joseph/Joseph and ask for a refund and they defended the sharpness of the blades [rightfully so] and stated most other graters do not have the rubberized bottom [many do, I have been shopping for them, and the ones that don't often have a handle at the top to hold. He addressed the core issue w having to hold it open, which to me is the biggest design flaw, by saying "Our sales literature on the product states that it is a folding grater and it does not state that it will remain open without holding.

works grate (ha ha), and it folds flat. That way you can have a nice box grater but not have it take up a ton of space. folds flat and goes into a drawer.

I guess it has been well established that this grater does NOT lock in the open position, but locks very well in the closed position, so I will try to mention some other things not much mentioned yet in other reviews.

I find the integral handle on the Joseph Joseph grater that forms when open is sufficiently ergonomic and allows enough leverage to keep my grater open, hold it in place against something, or hold the whole unit at a more optimum angle. I love this open back design rather than those superfluous seldom used additional grinders, graters, and slicers included with other bell graters (with dark rusty nether regions).

This open back (window cut) design allows for the grater to be operated while still folded flat and this is how I most often find myself using it. Like, for a quick sprinkle of cheese to garnish my dish, or a quick dash of zest, without opening the grater. Yes, it is sharp enough to zest and shred vegetables.

Which brings up another advantage that this design allows for, you can readily hold the handle or keep it shut, and still use it as a hand grater (as opposed to just a static grater) which is what the title of my review refers to.

Something else not much mentioned is that unlike conventional rigid box/bell graters, this one is fairly easy to clean and maintain. Both the open cut outs in the back and the ability to flatten make it very easy to access, clean and visually inspect both the front and back of the grater.

So it's not perfected (yet) but I rather like it (and I would buy it again).

The grater stays folded which is great, and so easy to store. Holding the grater while grating though is a pain, it needs to click into the open position as well as the collapsed position. The blade type bits are also quite shallow so takes a while to grate anything.

I wanted to replace my box grater with this because it looked easy to store. I am not sure this was a good idea. This is easy to store because it down fold almost flat but the handle side doesn't have any way to lock it open. I am not sure this is sturdy enough for me. If I hold it by the handle side it works but I am not comfortable having to hold the grater open with one hand while I grate with the other. It may be just a matter of getting used to it but right now the jury is still out.
