5.0 out of 5 stars please consult a decibel chart before reviewing... October 25, 2011

I've seen many reviews of this app by many people who clearly don't know or understand a SPL meter. It will probably never read 0. Even a quiet room such as a library will read 30-40 decibels. This app works as advertised, if not better. Try it and see when comparing it to a chart of decibel readings.

4.0 out of 5 stars Works as expected August 18, 2011

Compared this with a calibrated noise meter. It was off only a couple of dB at low noise levels. At higher noise levels off more significantly. A good quick and dirty tool

By sufficiently accurate I mean that this software on Android phones will give you a rough representation of sound pressure levels for sound checks. I am running mine on a Motorola Droid X running Android 2.3.4.

For bands some venues put restrictions on SPL levels either because their customers will begin to leave after a certain level, or because of local ordinances. Typical local ordinances usually specify dB SPL not to exceed 85 at the property line. See the background information below for why distance is an important factor, as well as why 85 is a common threshold.

This software on your Android phone will not be a convincing counterargument to a venue owner or enforcement personnel with a dedicated hardware meter. However, it will allow you to check SPL levels during your sound check to determine how compliant your band will be. I factor down ten percent to be on the safe side. For example, if the venue wants 85 dB at the property line and you get a reading of 76.5, you are probably safe.

You are not going to replace a dedicated meter such as a Sinometer JTS1357 Digital Sound Level Meter with this software, but if you are seeking quick, rough measurements this is more than adequate in my opinion.

One final use I put this to: as a drummer I practice dynamics. I can establish a level and practice at that level, using this meter to see if my notes are consistent, or if I spike or drift into louder (or softer) ranges.

Some Background: For folks who have no experience with sound pressure level measurements - SPL - the scale is logarithmic. Also, the readings are relative to sound sources.

4.0 out of 5 stars nook reminder September 14, 2011
Just a reminder, although this app claims to be compatible with Nook color, this device has no microphone ... it can't detect sound.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works great December 27, 2011

I needed to register noise levels on a job site and thought of trying this app. I have a Motorola Electrify and this free app works as good as the company's very expensive decibel meters. Seems to be accurate and very sensative.

Can't beat it for the price. I wouldn't use it in court but it gives you a good idea of how loud things are.

no complaints here. app is fairly accurate.remember children, unless you're in a soundproof room, 30-40 decibels is a quiet residential room.

1.0 out of 5 stars Dosen't Work on HTC Inspire 4G November 12, 2011
By J. HOOK
This application worked fine until I tried to stop it. None of the keys on my phone would do anything--it was frozen. I called my phone and that interrupted the program so I could use my phone again. Tried it three times with the same result before uninstalling it. I then loaded the Sound Meter app from the Android Market and it works fine--essentially the same.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good meter but could be more meaningful with some enhancements
this is just a simple DB meter. Could be more meaningful with a running graph and stop watch with a reset button to start a session over. Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars awesome, accurate
awesome, accurate, and easy to read/understand. does as advertised, note as with all of these meters they are limited to the hz and db range of your device.

3.0 out of 5 stars Needs more capability than it has, for my purposes.
App seems to work pretty well. Was dissappointed that it only went up to 120db. Uninstalled, and am looking for one with broader measuring range.

It seems to be very accurate as far as I can tell. Haven't compared it to anything else yet. It appears to be very sensitive.
