A Really Innovative Portrayal on the Life of Joseph!!, December 5, 2010
This review is from: Joseph's Gift (DVD)
When I first heard about a modern-day retelling of the Biblical story of Joseph, I immediately jumped to see it. I was really excited, seeing as I am a big fan of Joseph, and I thought it was a BRILLIANT idea to see it retold in contemporary setting (well, the 1980s and 90s lol). And this movie did not disappoint.
Everything, EVERYTHING kept me hooked, from the beginning to the end. The actors played their parts so well, and I thought the contemporary equivalents of the ancient counterparts was cleverly executed: Pharaoh as a Wall Street executive, the seven-year famine as an economic downturn, Joseph's slavery as imprisonment in an illegal factory, the Egyptian prison as a mental hospital, and so on. Interesting, too, how the film reduced the number of brothers from the original 12 to 6, and how they made Jacob widowed first, then remarried to Rachel - well, that would certainly fit into a 20th century context than multiple spouses, no doubt!
Still, it kind of makes you think, how one COULD relate to the story of Joseph, no matter how long ago he lived. The times and circumstances may be different, but it's still basically the same underlying principle: hardships, and having faith in God.
I give this movie 4 stars instead of a perfect 5 though because the ending scene was anticlimactic. To quote a friend of mine, it felt "rushed." The whole movie was good up to that point. It was kind of wooden, no real building up of emotions... so kinda disappointing. Also, God wasn't mentioned much throughout the movie, when in fact He plays a very crucial role in Joseph's life!
Other than that, a pretty good movie I wouldn't mind seeing again and again.

Great Movie!!!, December 6, 2008
This review is from: Joseph's Gift (DVD)
I absolutely love this movie! It is based on the bliblical story of Joseph. The movie does a great job of retelling this legendary story in a updated way so that it could relate to modern times. Freddy Rodriguez also did a great job in his portrayal of Joseph. This movie is good for all ages. I'm glad to see amazon is selling it. I searched hi and lo to find this movie after I saw it one late night on TV.

Great story..., March 8, 2011
This review is from: Joseph's Gift (DVD)
The biblical story of Joseph is one of my favorites. This was a very well done modern-day depiction. The acting was fantastic, the story very well written. It was beautifully done. It held to the integrity of the story, with a contemporary twist. Great job!
