Book Description

Over 10,000 copies sold!

He had to keep moving, that the man instinctively knew. He had to get away, from the rioting, the lawlessness, the killing. Away from the brutal gangs that ruled the highways. Then there was the boy that he found along the way, an orphan with no place to go. He couldn’t leave the child behind; that would be murder. Together they had to make their way across the razed landscape of post collapse America, west to where there was safety, a chance to begin again. If only they survived the journey.

Excerpt: Man had quickly degenerated to the animal instincts of the species and numerous bloody examples could be seen anywhere one looked. For many there were no more limits in this new world as it had only been the law that kept them from robbing or killing or raping each other, and the law was now gone. Only anarchy remained. Rotting murdered corpses littered his street like so much uncollected garbage. The smell was something of nightmares. It was like some bad science fiction movie but all too real. If it had been a movie the man would have found it laughable and changed the channel.

Excerpt: All around the nation it was the same. The rioting and killing started in the densely populated urban areas but quickly spilled into the suburbs and then out into the countryside, the blood following the line of the highways like water obeying gravity. The mob ruled and the mob wanted blood. Now they would have it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Powerful! September 27, 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Some years ago I read McCarthy's "The Road", barely! I don't know what his writing style is called, but I would consider it surrealistic, poetic, abstract, and not what most preppers want to read. Maybe the movie was better, but I haven't seen it yet. The reason I bring up that book is because "Joshua" reminds me of "Road", except it is readable, solid, realistic, and simply a can't-stop-thinking-about-it story! As far as I can tell this is John Wilson's first novel, and what a debut it is! This is one of the best-written novels I've read in awhile. We Kindle readers learn to overlook a lot of editing issues, but you won't have to worry about them in "Joshua".

Another great characteristic of this story is that the main character isn't a superman/unstoppable warrior we see in many books of apocalyptic fiction. He is an average guy caught up in a massive human disaster who learns how to survive in a world gone mad. He truly wants to harm nobody, and we feel as if part of his soul is lost every time he must kill to save himself or Joshua. He takes responsibility for a dying stranger's son, and then sets out on an epic journey to lead the boy to a place where he will be safe and loved.

Speaking of love, in many ways this novel is a love story. The man quickly grows to love the child with a protective intensity that all of us who are fathers hopefully understand and relate to. Everything the man must do to protect the child he loves is worth the cost to himself, both physically and spiritually. With no end of characters exploiting and harming others along the road, the man who loves Joshua stands as an example of what is best about mankind.

For those readers who enjoy apocalyptic action, this book is for you. Looking for more of a human-story from your TEOTWAWKI-novel?

5.0 out of 5 stars A gem in a desolate land August 16, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
That's how this book feels. In the land that is post apocalyptic novels there are some real shockers, and then you stumble upon a gem like 'Joshua' and the search feels worthwhile.

There is much to love about this book. It has all the features of good PA story ie survival, action, brutality, a quest etc. But what really separates Joshua from the normal fare is the humanity and emotion woven into the tale. There is a real depth to the story telling here and I found myself caring in an almost fierce way for The Man and Joshua. The book has twists and turns, but none of the 'by an amazing coincidence' plot lines you often find in this genre.

It was a delight to read this book. It is an Indie novel and as such there were a few typos scattered throughout, but I decided not to don the hat of the 'proof reading Nazi', and instead just focus on the significant talent the author has shown in producing of work of this quality. I happily and without hesitation award five stars, if you are vaciliating about buying this book my strong suggestion is hesitate no more just click 'buy now', you'll be glad you did.

Now, where can I find another gem....does anyone have a map?

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book May 3, 2012

Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Couldn't put it down. Good action and good story about the boy and the man's journey. What I really like about this book is that it is realistic. I hate to read a book where a character " takes the safety off on his Glock" or some other nonsense. The author clearly researched the topic well. If you enjoy apocalyptic novels (or just action novels) buy this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars An enjoyable read August 23, 2012
By agony
Format:Paperback
I downloaded "Joshua" several months ago but only now found time to read it. I'm a fan of things post-apocalyptic/survivalist and most offerings out there are either terribly derivative (zombies), or seemingly paranoia-induced tin-foil hat fare. "Joshua" is realistic, and simple to understand how the world fell. Spiritual but not preachy, and above all, a good story of human relations and bonding.
One of my all-time favorite books is "The Road" by Cormac McCarthy, and yeah, it's easy to make comaprisons between the two. Despite the superficial similarities, the two are in no way alike. Granted, McCarthy's use of the language is genius, and his style cannot be duplicated easily, nor should it. "Joshua" is a straight-forward read, filled with enough action and adventure to satisfy even the most ADD-challenged reader. Having discovered this novel on a gun forum frequented by the author, I was pleased to see a well-balanced and unbiased commentary on firearms and their useage. The technical aspects where spot-on.
A five star book for me either makes me cry like a baby, mad as hell, or makes me think of the book for weeks if not months after reading it. Very few books have reached that status for me, although the previously mentioned "The Road" is one such book. "Joshua" falls short for me in that I don't feel any significant post-read emotional bond, but it's still a very strong work considering it's also the author's first novel.
For the download price, it can't be beat. READ IT!!!!

Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I can't say enough good about this book. It made me laugh, it made me cry, it made me wish the book was much longer. I just had to keep reading to find out what happened next. I'm sure this won't be a series but am looking forward to the author's next book. You really can't miss by buying this book. Try it !!

5.0 out of 5 stars Joshua review
I read a lot of post apocalyptic books. Joshua is definitely different from most of them. It's more about a man trying to behave honorably in an uncivilized world.
