He examines in detail all aspects of his artistic and personal life, including his experimental history and "fancy" paintings, as well as his better-known work as a portrait painter. McIntyre also explains Reynolds' thinking about art history in the context of his life in 18th-century England. Reynolds was a central figure in the development of British art, and in this biography McIntyre explores fully the nature and extent of his contribution.

About the Author
Ian McIntyre worked for many years for the BBC, on both sides of the microphone. He was first presenter of Radio 4's Analysis programme in the 1970s, and was subsequently the Corporation's longest-serving Controller of Radio 3. He has written The Expense of Glory: A Life of John Reith, Dirt and Deity: A Life of Robert Burns and most recently Garrick, a major biography published by Penguin in 1999. He is now one of the chief non-fiction reviewers for The Times.
