Tony Robinson tells Bible stories on location in Israel cloaked in contemporary clothes (a golf shirt and walking shorts) and a passionate, contagious enthusiasm. In "Joshua Smashes Jericho," he acts out how the Israelites, dusty and unkempt from 40 years of wandering the desert, stormed the walled city. He bangs away at walls, sprints in and out of buildings, dances in a tribal fashion, and updates Bible terminology with phrases such as "power-crazed maniac" and "big bunch of hippies." In the second story, "Joshua in Trouble Valley," extras in native garb appear and there's even a camel. Here Robinson lounges goofily as "General Joshua," in his lavender pastel shirt, drinking coffee from a feather-covered service. Robinson speaks each sentence with such force that he builds suspense, even for those who know the stories well. For those who don't, consider this 30-minute tape an entertaining set of video Cliffs Notes.

From the back cover
"Joshua Smashes Jericho": The Israelites, led by General Joshua, come out of the desert after forty years' wandering. They plan to take over the land of Canaan, a land "flowing with milk and honey." First on the hit list is Jericho. The walls are demolished, the city is reduced to rubble, and the population wiped out--except for a barmaid and her family who helped the Israelite scouts, and a student who accidentally gets a reprieve.
"Joshua in Trouble Valley": Joshua leads the Israelites in a strike against the Canaanite town of Ai. One of his warriors, Achan, runs afoul of the holy men after they find that he has been keeping loot for himself instead of giving it to the God of the Israelites. He is stoned to death. The mayor of another Canaanite town, Gibeon, tries to trick Joshua into making a peace treaty, but Joshua quickly gets the better of him. Nothing seems to stand in the way of the Israelites now--or does it?
